EPFO Reports Addition of 14.58 Lakh Net Members in March 2025

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has unveiled its provisional payroll data for March 2025, indicating a significant net addition of 14.58 lakh members. This marks a 1.15% increase in net payroll additions compared to March 2024, reflecting a positive trend in employment opportunities and a growing awareness of employee benefits. The data highlights the effectiveness of EPFOโs outreach initiatives in promoting its services and benefits to the workforce.
New Subscribers on the Rise
In March 2025, EPFO welcomed approximately 7.54 lakh new subscribers, representing a 2.03% increase from February 2025 and a 0.98% rise compared to March 2024. This growth can be attributed to the expanding job market and heightened awareness of the advantages of EPFO membership. The increase in new subscribers underscores the organization’s successful outreach programs, which have effectively communicated the benefits of provident fund membership to potential employees.
The data reveals that the 18-25 age group is particularly prominent among new subscribers, with 4.45 lakh individuals from this demographic joining EPFO in March 2025. This group accounts for a substantial 58.94% of all new subscribers, indicating a strong trend of young individuals entering the organized workforce. The growth in this age category is notable, showing a 4.21% increase from February 2025 and a 4.73% rise from March 2024. The net payroll addition for this age group reached approximately 6.68 lakh, reflecting a 6.49% increase year-over-year.
Rejoining Members and Female Participation
The data also reveals that around 13.23 lakh members who had previously exited the EPFO rejoined in March 2025. This represents a 0.39% increase from February 2025 and a significant 12.17% rise compared to March 2024. Many of these individuals switched jobs and chose to transfer their EPF accumulations rather than opting for final settlements, thereby ensuring their long-term financial security and continued social protection.
In terms of gender representation, March 2025 saw the addition of approximately 2.08 lakh new female subscribers, marking a 0.18% increase from the previous month and a 4.18% rise year-over-year. The net payroll addition for female members stood at around 2.92 lakh, with a year-over-year growth of 0.78%. This upward trend in female membership reflects a broader shift towards a more inclusive workforce, highlighting the increasing participation of women in the organized labor market.
State-wise Contributions and Industry Trends
A state-wise analysis of the payroll data indicates that the top five states and Union Territories contributed approximately 59.67% of the net payroll additions, totaling around 8.70 lakh. Maharashtra emerged as the leader, accounting for 20.24% of the net payroll additions during March 2025. Other significant contributors included Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Haryana, Gujarat, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana, each adding more than 5% to the total net payroll.
Industry-wise trends show notable growth in payroll additions across various sectors, particularly in restaurants, cement, general insurance, canteens, forwarding agencies, travel agencies, and hotels. Approximately 45.59% of the total net payroll addition came from expert services, which encompass manpower suppliers, contractors, and security services. This diverse growth across industries reflects the ongoing recovery and expansion of the job market in various sectors.
The EPFO’s payroll data is provisional and subject to updates as the organization continuously processes employee records. This includes adjustments from previous months, ensuring the accuracy of the reported figures. Since April 2018, EPFO has been releasing payroll data, capturing trends in membership and employment patterns to provide insights into the labor market.
