EPFO Instructed to Activate UAN via Aadhaar OTP

The Central Government has issued directions to Ministries/Departments to ensure that subsidies and incentives under welfare schemes are paid to beneficiaries through Aadhaar Payment Bridge. This system also ensures that 100% Biometric Aadhaar Authentication is used for authentication purposes. To maximize the number of employers and employees benefiting from the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme announced in the Union Budget 2024-25, the Ministry of Labour & Employment has instructed the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) to actively engage with employers to activate the Universal Account Number (UAN) of employees. EPFO will involve their zonal and regional offices to ensure effective outreach and implementation of the campaign.

Using Aadhaar as an identity document simplifies government delivery processes, enhances transparency, and improves efficiency. With Aadhaar-based verification, beneficiaries no longer need to provide multiple documents to prove their identity.

In the first stage of the activation process, employers are required to complete the UAN activation through Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP) for all their employees who joined in the current financial year by November 30, 2024. They must then complete the process for all employees working with them.

UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO’s comprehensive online services. This enables employees to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. Employees can access these services 24/7 from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices.

To activate the UAN, employees need to follow these steps:
1. Go to the EPFO Member Portal.
2. Click on the “Activate UAN” link under “Important Links”.
3. Enter UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth, and Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
4. Ensure the mobile number is Aadhaar-linked to access the full range of EPFO’s digital services.
5. Agree to Aadhaar OTP verification.
6. Click “Get Authorization PIN” to receive an OTP on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
7. Enter the OTP to complete the activation.
8. A password will be sent to the registered mobile number upon successful activation.

In the second stage, UAN activation will include the state-of-the-art facility of biometric authentication through Face-recognition Technology.

This initiative aims to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and provide employees with convenient access to EPFO services. By leveraging Aadhaar-based authentication, the government is taking steps towards a more inclusive and digitized future.
