Enhancing Telecom Accessibility in India

In a significant step towards improving telecom accessibility and security, Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, recently unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at empowering citizens across India. The launch event featured the introduction of the Sanchar Saathi Mobile App, the National Broadband Mission (NBM) 2.0, and the inauguration of the Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) facility at DBN-funded 4G mobile sites. These initiatives are designed to enhance the overall telecom experience for users, ensuring safety and connectivity for all.

Sanchar Saathi Mobile App: A Tool for Empowerment

The Sanchar Saathi Mobile App is a user-friendly platform that aims to bolster telecom security and empower users. During the launch, Minister Scindia emphasized the app’s role in providing access to opportunities while ensuring a secure environment for all users. He stated, “This initiative not only provides access to opportunities but also ensures a secure environment for all users.” The app is available on both Android and iOS platforms, making it accessible to a wide audience.

Key features of the Sanchar Saathi App include tools for reporting suspected fraud communications, managing mobile connections, blocking lost or stolen devices, and verifying the authenticity of mobile handsets. Users can easily report suspicious calls and messages directly from their mobile phone logs. Additionally, the app allows citizens to identify all mobile connections issued in their name, ensuring no unauthorized usage occurs. With over 90 crore smartphone users in India, the Sanchar Saathi App aims to provide essential services at the fingertips of every individual, enhancing their telecom experience.

National Broadband Mission 2.0: Connecting Rural India

Another significant initiative launched during the event was the National Broadband Mission (NBM) 2.0. Minister Scindia unveiled its vision document, building on the success of NBM 1.0, which established nearly 8 lakh towers across the country. He highlighted the impressive growth in broadband subscriptions, which increased from 66 crore to 94 crore. This growth serves as the foundation for the ambitious goals set by NBM 2.0.

The primary objective of NBM 2.0 is to connect the remaining 1.7 lakh villages in India. The Minister stated, “Our goal is to ensure that at least 60 out of every 100 rural households have access to broadband connectivity.” Furthermore, the initiative aims to achieve a minimum fixed broadband download speed of 100 Mbps, thereby creating a robust digital infrastructure for rural areas. This focus on rural connectivity is crucial for bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all citizens have access to essential online services.

Intra Circle Roaming: Enhancing Connectivity Choices

During the launch event, the Union Minister also inaugurated the Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) facility at DBN-funded 4G mobile sites. This initiative allows three major telecom service providersโ€”BSNL, Airtel, and Relianceโ€”to share their infrastructure at all DBN-funded sites. Minister Scindia emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This is a crucial pillar, with three of our TSPs joining forces to leverage each other’s infrastructure.” With nearly 27,836 such sites, this initiative not only enhances connectivity but also provides customers across the country with greater freedom of choice.

The ICR facility is expected to improve service quality and coverage, particularly in rural and remote areas. By allowing different telecom providers to utilize each other’s infrastructure, users can enjoy better connectivity and more reliable services. This initiative is a vital step towards ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their location, have access to quality telecom services.
