Enhancing Education for Tribal Students in India
The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) recently held a significant event known as the Manthan Shivir in New Delhi on November 29, 2024. This gathering aimed to unite State Nodal Officers from 22 states across India for a comprehensive brainstorming session. The primary focus was to strengthen the management of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs). These schools play a crucial role in providing quality education and infrastructure for tribal students.
A Platform for Discussion and Improvement
The Shivir was chaired by NESTS Commissioner Shri Ajeet Kumar Srivastava. During the event, participants engaged in robust discussions on various critical aspects of tribal education. Key topics included improvements in the examination system, admissions, recruitment, infrastructure development, and financial management. Each of these areas is vital for transforming the educational landscape for tribal students in India.
Commissioner Srivastava emphasized the inherent talents of tribal students in sports, arts, culture, education, and innovation. He highlighted that with collective efforts, these students could achieve remarkable success and contribute significantly to various fields. His address reaffirmed NESTS’ commitment to collaborating with different bodies to enhance the performance of EMRSs and improve the facilities available to tribal students nationwide.
Progress and Future Plans for EMRSs
The meeting also provided an update on the progress of the EMRS initiative. Currently, there are 476 operational EMRSs across the country, with plans to establish over 100 additional schools in the coming year. This expansion aims to increase access to quality education for tribal children, especially in remote and underserved areas.
Another focal point of the discussions was the recruitment process. The first phase of recruitment has successfully concluded, resulting in the posting of more than 9,000 teaching and non-teaching staff members. The participants also discussed the planning and execution of the next recruitment cycle, which is essential for ensuring that EMRSs are well-staffed and equipped to provide quality education.

State Nodal Officers played an active role in the Shivir, offering valuable suggestions aimed at strengthening the management of EMRSs.
