Empowering Women in STEM: India’s WISE-KIRAN Initiative

The Indian government is taking significant steps to enhance women’s participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh recently announced the implementation of the โ€˜Women in Science and Engineering-KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN)โ€™ scheme. This initiative aims to create a more inclusive environment for women in STEM, addressing the gender gap that has persisted in these fields. During a recent session in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Singh detailed various programs designed to support women scientists and engineers, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering gender equality in research and innovation.

Fellowship Programs to Support Women in Research

The WISE-KIRAN initiative includes several fellowship programs aimed at supporting women in their research careers. The WISE-PhD Fellowship is designed for women pursuing research in both basic and applied sciences. This program provides financial assistance and mentorship, enabling women to focus on their studies and contribute to scientific advancements.

Additionally, the WISE-Post Doctoral Fellowship (WISE-PDF) and WISE-SCOPE encourage women to engage in postdoctoral research. These programs offer resources and support to help women transition from doctoral studies to advanced research roles.

Another important component is the WIDUSHI Programme, which assists senior women scientists, including those who are retired or unemployed, in continuing their research careers. This program recognizes the valuable experience and knowledge these women possess and aims to reintegrate them into the scientific community.

These fellowship programs are crucial for creating a supportive environment for women in research. By providing financial aid and mentorship, the government is helping to build a strong foundation for women scientists, enabling them to thrive in their respective fields.

Training Women in Intellectual Property Rights

The WISE-KIRAN initiative also includes a focus on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) through the WISE-IPR program. This program offers a one-year on-the-job training opportunity for women in IPR. Understanding intellectual property is essential for women in STEM, as it empowers them to protect their innovations and research findings.

The training equips women with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of IPR, which is vital in todayโ€™s competitive research environment. By fostering expertise in this area, the program aims to enhance women’s contributions to scientific advancements and innovation.

Moreover, this training aligns with the broader goal of promoting women’s entrepreneurship in technology. By understanding IPR, women can better position themselves in the market, ensuring that their inventions and ideas are safeguarded. This initiative not only supports individual women but also contributes to a more robust and diverse innovation ecosystem in India.

Inspiring Young Girls to Join STEM

The Vigyan Jyoti program is another key aspect of the WISE-KIRAN initiative. This program targets meritorious girls in classes IX to XII, encouraging them to pursue higher education and careers in STEM fields. By providing mentorship and guidance, Vigyan Jyoti aims to inspire young girls to consider careers in areas where female participation is traditionally low.

The program emphasizes the importance of early intervention in shaping career choices. By reaching out to young girls, it seeks to break down stereotypes and encourage them to explore their interests in science and technology. This initiative is crucial for building a pipeline of future women scientists and engineers.

In addition to mentorship, the program also provides resources and support for academic excellence. By fostering a positive environment for young girls, Vigyan Jyoti aims to create a generation of women who are confident in their abilities and eager to contribute to STEM fields.

Supporting Women-Led Startups and Research Careers

The National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) is another significant component of the WISE-KIRAN initiative. This program provides women entrepreneurs with essential resources such as capacity building, incubation facilities, mentorship, and early-stage funding. The NIDHI-Seed Support Program specifically offers seed funding for startups, including those led by women.

Furthermore, the Women Scientist Scheme (WOS) plays a vital role in reviving careers and driving research. It supports women returning to research in basic and applied sciences and enables them to provide solutions to societal challenges. The WOS-C component trains women in IPR, with many participants becoming registered Patent Agents.

Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that over 2,076 women scientists have benefited from the WOS-A program, with many completing PhDs and publishing thousands of research papers. These initiatives collectively empower women to excel in STEM fields, fostering a more inclusive scientific ecosystem in India.
