Empowering Women in STEM: A Workshop Recap

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research – National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) recently hosted a significant workshop to celebrate the first decadal anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event, themed “Empowering Girls for Participation in STEM: Fostering Awareness for Inclusive Education,” aimed to inspire young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This initiative aligns with UNESCOโ€™s theme, “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science.” The workshop took place at the CSIR-NIScPR in New Delhi and brought together 56 undergraduate female students from four prestigious womenโ€™s colleges of the University of Delhi. These colleges included Gargi College, Kalindi College, Lady Irwin College, Deshbandhu College, and Miranda House. The event provided a valuable platform for mentorship, resources, and insights into government initiatives, scholarships, and funding opportunities available for women in STEM.

Importance of Gender Equality in STEM

In her welcome address, Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director of CSIR-NIScPR, highlighted the critical need for gender equality in STEM fields. She emphasized that creating an enabling environment is essential for women to excel in scientific careers. Prof. Aggarwal discussed the various challenges women face when transitioning from academia to professional roles. She pointed out that gender sensitization is crucial in breaking stereotypes that often hinder women’s progress in these fields.

Dr. Geetha Vani Rayasam, Head of the CSIR-Human Resource Development Group, also contributed to the discussion by presenting various initiatives that CSIR has implemented to support women in science. Esteemed speakers shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities that young women encounter in STEM. The keynote address by Prof. Mini Thomas, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology at Jamia Millia Islamia, served as a source of inspiration. She encouraged young women to break barriers in traditionally male-dominated STEM fields and urged institutions to create more opportunities for women scientists.

Insights from Leading Female Scientists

The second session of the workshop featured Dr. Monika Kulshrestha, Chief Scientist at CSIR-National Physical Laboratory. She spoke about the importance of maintaining good health while pursuing lifelong learning and professional growth. Following her talk, Dr. Ambika Behl, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, delivered an expert lecture titled “Highway Engineering Field: A Manโ€™s World.” Dr. Behl shared her journey from laboratory research to fieldwork, addressing the gender biases and societal expectations she faced along the way.

She emphasized the need for women to step out of their comfort zones and recognize their strengths. Dr. Kanika Malik, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR and Delhi branch convenor of the Indian Women Scientistsโ€™ Association (IWSA), also delivered a talk related to IWSA. The interactive segment of the workshop allowed students to engage in group discussions based on pre-filled questionnaires, where they could express their aspirations and challenges in STEM education. Mrs. Sandhya Wakdikar, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR, concluded the session with a talk on โ€œOpportunities for Undergraduate Girls in STEM,โ€ providing valuable information on government schemes and funding opportunities available to support women in these fields.

Commitment to Bridging the Gender Gap

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from Mrs. Sandhya Wakdikar, followed by the National Anthem. CSIR-NIScPR reaffirmed its commitment to bridging the gender gap in STEM and fostering an inclusive scientific community for future generations. This initiative marks a significant step toward empowering young women in STEM, ensuring they receive the necessary support and resources to thrive in scientific careers. The event not only inspired participants but also highlighted the importance of continued efforts to promote gender equality in science and technology. By providing mentorship and resources, CSIR-NIScPR is paving the way for a more inclusive future in STEM fields.
