Efforts to Bridge Gaps in Various Fields Will Be Thorough
The Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, announced significant initiatives aimed at enhancing the development of tribal communities across India during a media briefing in New Delhi. He emphasized the government’s commitment to bridging developmental gaps for various tribes and highlighted the upcoming commemoration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda as Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, set to take place from November 15, 2024, to November 15, 2025. The minister also detailed the PM-JANMAN initiative, which aims to improve the living conditions of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) through a substantial budgetary allocation.
Commemoration of Bhagwan Birsa Munda
Shri Jual Oram revealed that the Government of India has approved a year-long celebration to honor the contributions of tribal leaders and communities to India’s freedom struggle. This initiative, known as Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, will take place from November 15, 2024, to November 15, 2025. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs plans to collaborate with states and Union Territories to organize national and state-level events through Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs). This celebration aims to recognize the historical significance of tribal contributions and promote awareness of their cultural heritage.
PM-JANMAN Initiative for PVTGs
The PM-JANMAN initiative is a transformative policy aimed at fostering the holistic development of 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups across 18 states and one Union Territory. With a budget of โน24,104 Crore, the initiative allocates โน15,336 Crore from the central government and โน8,768 Crore from state governments. The program focuses on providing essential services such as safe housing, clean drinking water, education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. The minister stated that the initiative aims to improve the living conditions of PVTG communities within three years, ensuring equitable access to necessary resources.
Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan
Building on the success of the PM-JANMAN scheme, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has launched the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan. This ambitious program, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 2, 2024, in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, integrates efforts from 17 ministries to enhance the development of tribal populations in villages. The initiative focuses on addressing infrastructural and human development gaps in areas with high tribal concentrations. With a total investment of โน79,156 Crore over five years, the program targets nearly 5 crore tribal individuals across 63,843 villages in 26 states and four Union Territories.
Educational Initiatives and Health Programs
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has implemented several educational initiatives to improve the quality of education for tribal students, particularly in Eklavya Model Residential Schools. These initiatives include skill development, teacher training, and digital learning. The ministry also administers five scholarship schemes that benefit approximately 30 lakh tribal students annually. In the health sector, the ministry has launched a Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, aiming to address health crises in tribal regions. This mission includes a nationwide screening drive and awareness campaigns to combat Sickle Cell Anaemia, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving health outcomes for tribal communities.
