Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Meets UNESCO Emissary Vidar

Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, engaged in crucial discussions with UNESCO emissary Vidar Helgesen today, focusing on the conservation of oceans. Leading the Indian delegation at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of sustainable ocean use. The conference, running from June 9 to 13, aims to enhance global efforts in ocean conservation and management.

Strengthening Ocean Observation

During the bilateral talks, Dr. Jitendra Singh and Mr. Vidar Helgesen, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, discussed enhancing global ocean observation capabilities. Dr. Singh reiterated India’s commitment to contribute to these efforts through advanced satellite-based technologies and in-situ observation systems. He highlighted the significance of improving scientific understanding of the Indian Ocean, particularly regarding climate studies and monsoon forecasting. Dr. Singh stated that strengthening ocean observation infrastructure is vital for better climate predictions and unlocking the economic potential of the blue economy.

Encouraging Multilateral Cooperation

Mr. Helgesen encouraged India to take a more active role in the IOCโ€™s global coordination mechanisms. He emphasized the need for collaboration in data sharing, ocean services, and regional observation efforts. Their conversation highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing pressing challenges such as sea level rise, marine pollution, and biodiversity loss. This collaborative approach is essential for developing effective strategies to manage and protect ocean resources.

India’s Strategic Role in Ocean Governance

India’s participation in UNOC3 comes at a pivotal moment, as coastal states increasingly recognize the strategic and economic value of oceans. With its extensive coastline and reliance on the monsoon cycle, India is positioning itself as a key player in global ocean governance, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. The conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, gathers heads of state, ministers, scientists, and civil society leaders to discuss accelerating progress on Sustainable Development Goal 14, which aims to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Future Engagements and Priorities

Throughout the week, Dr. Jitendra Singh is expected to participate in various multilateral engagements, emphasizing India’s priorities in marine science, capacity building, and equitable access to ocean data. These discussions will further underline India’s commitment to sustainable ocean management and its role in global efforts to protect marine environments. The outcomes of this conference could significantly influence future policies and initiatives aimed at safeguarding ocean health and promoting sustainable practices.
