e-Shram Portal Expands Accessibility for Workers
The Indian government has taken a significant step towards enhancing social security for unorganized workers with the launch of a multilingual feature on the e-Shram portal. Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, introduced this new functionality during an event in New Delhi. The e-Shram portal, designed to be a comprehensive solution for unorganized workers, is now accessible in all 22 Scheduled Languages of India. This initiative aims to break down language barriers and ensure that workers from diverse linguistic backgrounds can easily register and access government benefits.
A Milestone in Social Protection
The launch of the multilingual e-Shram portal marks a crucial milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to provide social protection to unorganized workers. Previously, the portal was only available in English, Hindi, Kannada, and Marathi. With the integration of the Bhashini project by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), the portal now supports a wider range of languages. This enhancement is expected to increase user engagement and trust in the platform, which already sees over 30,000 registrations daily from unorganized workers.
Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the importance of this initiative, urging all unorganized workers to register on the e-Shram portal. By doing so, they can access various government schemes aimed at improving their welfare and livelihood. The portal currently facilitates access to twelve different government schemes, making it a vital resource for workers seeking support.
Enhancing User Experience and Outreach
To ensure a seamless experience for users, the government plans to engage various mediators, including Common Service Centres, Bank Correspondents, and Post Offices. These entities will help facilitate the registration process and provide assistance to workers who may face challenges in navigating the portal. Dr. Mandaviya highlighted that this outreach strategy aims to make the e-Shram portal more user-friendly and accessible to all.
The government is also exploring the introduction of an e-Shram mobile application. This app will allow users to register, update their information, and access benefits more conveniently. Additionally, a Single Common Application Form is in the works to enable a single sign-on for users, further simplifying the process of accessing social protection benefits.
Future Initiatives and Integration Plans
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is committed to making the e-Shram portal a ‘One Stop Solution’ for unorganized workers. Secretary Sumita Dawra elaborated on the ministry’s plans to integrate all relevant social security and welfare schemes into the portal. This includes programs from both the central and state governments, ensuring that workers have comprehensive access to the support they need.
The registration of Building and Other Construction Workers (BoCW) and gig workers is currently ongoing, with efforts being made to expedite the process. The government aims to streamline access to social protection benefits through the e-Shram portal, making it easier for workers to receive the assistance they deserve. The integration of payment gateways is also on the agenda, which will further enhance the user experience and accessibility of benefits.
A Commitment to Unorganized Workers
The launch of the multilingual e-Shram portal is a significant advancement in the Indian government’s commitment to improving social security for unorganized workers. By breaking down language barriers and enhancing accessibility, the government aims to empower workers and ensure they can easily access the benefits and support they need. This initiative not only strengthens the social safety net for millions of workers but also reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity and welfare in the digital age.
