Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, recently honored the Indian team that triumphed at the 18th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO-2025) held in Jining, China, from August 8 to 16, 2025. The team showcased exceptional talent, securing a total of seven medals, including one gold, four silver, and two bronze, along with a third prize in the International Geoscience Youth Movement (I-GYM) Reporter category. This achievement highlights the growing aspirations of Indian youth, particularly from smaller cities, in the field of Earth sciences.

Outstanding Performance by Team India

The Indian team delivered a remarkable performance at the IESO-2025, earning a total of seven medals. Rayansh Gupta from Sat Paul Mittal School in Ludhiana, Punjab, stood out by winning a gold medal, a silver medal, and the third prize in the I-GYM category. Charuvrat Bains from M.G.N. Government Support and Educational Reforms

Dr. Jitendra Singh praised the young achievers for their contributions to the nation and emphasized the importance of the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) in nurturing creative potential among students. He noted that the policy encourages students to explore diverse disciplines beyond traditional subject streams. This shift is fostering interest in cutting-edge fields such as Earth Sciences, Biotechnology, and Space Technology. The Minister urged students to take advantage of government initiatives like Vigyan Jyoti, scholarships, and research grants to further their ideas and benefit society.

Annual Participation in IESO

The Ministry of Earth Sciences, represented by Secretary Dr. M. Ravichandran, highlighted the annual support provided to students for the IESO. Each year, the Indian National Earth Science Olympiad (INESO) is conducted across 300 centers in India, from which four students are selected to represent the country at the international level. Dr. Ravichandran noted that India’s performance in recent years at the IESO has been commendable, reflecting the growing interest and capability in Earth sciences among Indian students.

Encouragement for Future Endeavors

Dr. Jitendra Singh encouraged students to look beyond competitions and apply their knowledge to address real-world challenges. He emphasized the importance of innovation and urged the young minds to utilize their skills for the greater good of society. The International Earth Science Olympiad, established in 2003 by the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO), serves as a platform for secondary school students worldwide to showcase their talents in Earth sciences. India has been participating since 2007 and previously hosted the 10th edition in Mysore in 2013.
