Donald Trump Unveils New Deal Amid Indonesia’s 19% Economic Challenge

US President Donald Trump has announced a significant new trade agreement with Indonesia, which will reduce tariffs on Indonesian exports to the United States from 32% to 19%. This deal, finalized after discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, grants American goods full market access in Indonesia, a country with a population exceeding 280 million. Trump emphasized that this agreement represents a historic opportunity for U.S. farmers, ranchers, and fishermen.

Details of the Trade Agreement

Under the terms of the new trade deal, Indonesia has committed to purchasing $15 billion in U.S. energy products, $4.5 billion in agricultural goods, and 50 Boeing aircraft, primarily the long-haul 777 models. In exchange, Indonesian products entering the U.S. will be subject to a flat 19% tariff, while American exports to Indonesia will be exempt from both tariff and non-tariff barriers. Trump also highlighted a provision to prevent tariff circumvention, stating that any goods transshipped from countries with higher tariffs would incur additional charges.

This agreement is part of Trump’s broader strategy to reshape global trade relations, particularly as the U.S. approaches an August 1 deadline for increased import levies. The deal with Indonesia mirrors recent agreements made by the U.S. with other nations, including Vietnam and the United Kingdom, as reported by Reuters. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick noted that the agreement effectively eliminates tariffs on U.S. exports while imposing tariffs on imports from Indonesia.

Impact on Bilateral Trade

While Indonesia is not among the largest trading partners of the United States, the bilateral trade volume reached approximately $40 billion in 2024. The U.S. has experienced a trade deficit of nearly $18 billion with Indonesia, primarily importing palm oil, electronics, footwear, and rubber. The new trade deal aims to address this imbalance by enhancing U.S. access to the Indonesian market and promoting American exports.

Indonesian official Susiwijono Moegiarso confirmed that both countries are preparing a joint statement to outline the agreed-upon tariff and non-tariff arrangements. The agreement is expected to foster stronger economic ties between the two nations and create new opportunities for American businesses.

Broader Trade Context

The announcement of the trade deal with Indonesia comes amid increasing pressure on the Trump administration to finalize additional trade agreements. Recently, Trump has sent tariff threat letters to over 20 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and members of the European Union. Ongoing discussions with India are also reportedly making progress, with Trump expressing optimism about gaining access to that market. In response to the U.S. trade policies, the European Union is preparing retaliatory tariffs exceeding $84 billion if negotiations fail. The EU has warned that Trump’s proposed 30% duties on European goods could significantly disrupt bilateral trade relations. This new trade agreement with Indonesia marks a pivotal moment in U.S. trade policy, reflecting Trump’s commitment to reshaping international trade dynamics while addressing domestic economic concerns.
