The result is a disjointed viewing experience, particularly noticeable during scenes with steady camera movements, such as panning shots. Judder can occur even when the correct frame rate is used, as 24fps may not provide the smoothness desired on high-definition screens. Authentic Motion is Dolby’s response to the judder problem, allowing filmmakers to dictate when and how motion smoothing is applied during the mastering of their content. This feature is part of Dolby Vision 2 Max, which enables creators to select the intensity and duration of motion smoothing for specific scenes.
During a demonstration of the Prime Video show “Paris has Fallen,” filmed at 25fps, judder was evident in a tracking shot. However, when motion smoothing was applied using Authentic Motion, the judder was effectively minimized without compromising the film’s natural look. The creators utilized a range of motion smoothing levels, adjusting from level 5 during the tracking shot to level 0 when the camera focused on a stationary subject. This flexibility allows filmmakers to maintain the integrity of their work while addressing technical challenges.
Technical Insights into Authentic Motion
It is important to note that Dolby’s role with Authentic Motion is not to perform motion smoothing itself but to provide a framework for filmmakers to embed commands within their videos. This means that the final output may vary across different television models, as the motion processing occurs within each TV’s system.
Currently, using Filmmaker Mode disables this feature, reverting to default settings. However, in other Dolby Vision picture modes, Authentic Motion activates automatically when compatible content is detected. This feature is exclusive to Dolby Vision 2 Max, ensuring that only TVs meeting specific quality standards can support it, including a requirement for 120Hz refresh rates.
Interestingly, the demonstration was conducted on a Hisense U7N, an affordable model that meets Dolby Vision 2 Max certification criteria. While Hisense is confirmed as a launch partner, the future support from other brands remains uncertain, with LG indicating no plans for compatibility.
