Diu Recognized as a National Example in Renewable Energy by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, has hailed Diu as a national benchmark for renewable energy adoption, noting that the region meets its entire daytime electricity demand through solar power. During his visit, he celebrated Diu’s achievement as the first district in India to fulfill its power needs entirely with solar energy, boasting a total capacity of 11.88 MW. The Minister’s trip aimed to review the progress of solar energy initiatives and assess the implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Review Meeting on Solar Energy Initiatives
During his visit to Diu, Minister Pralhad Joshi chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials from the Union Territory administration. The focus was on evaluating the current status of solar energy generation, the existing supply framework, and future expansion opportunities. Energy Secretary Shri T. Arun provided a comprehensive presentation detailing the operational solar energy plants, their production capacities, and the benefits experienced by households in the region. He highlighted that a significant number of families in Diu are now reaping the advantages of solar energy, showcasing the positive impact of these initiatives on local communities.
The meeting included key figures such as Diu Collector Dr. Vivek Kumar and Deputy Collector Shri Shivam Mishra, among other senior officials. Their discussions emphasized the importance of continuing to enhance solar energy infrastructure to ensure sustainable energy solutions for the residents of Diu.
Field Visit to Solar Facilities
Following the meeting, Minister Joshi conducted a field visit to several solar energy facilities in Diu, including the notable 9 MW Solar Park located in Fudam. This facility exemplifies Diuโs commitment to sustainable energy practices and plays a crucial role in fulfilling the region’s clean energy requirements. The Minister noted that the Fudam Solar Park has significantly reduced transmission and distribution losses, which has allowed for a revision of electricity tariffs, ultimately benefiting consumers.
Joshi praised the leadership of UT Administrator Shri Praful Patel, acknowledging his proactive approach and vision as key factors in achieving this clean energy transformation. The Minister’s visit to the solar park underscored the importance of local leadership in driving renewable energy initiatives.
Long-term Impact and Future Goals
In his remarks, Minister Joshi emphasized the long-term benefits of the investments made in renewable energy infrastructure over the past decade. He stated that these investments have already been recouped through the supply and sale of solar power. The Minister called for accelerated implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana to maximize its benefits for Diu’s residents and achieve complete household saturation with solar energy solutions.
This visit reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to promoting clean energy initiatives across the nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The focus on renewable energy not only aims to meet current demands but also seeks to ensure a sustainable future for all regions of India.
