Dewi Sartika was born on December 4, 1884, in Bandung, Indonesia, to Sundanese aristocratic parents, R. Ranga Somanegara and R. A. Rajapermas. Growing up in a society with limited educational opportunities for women, Sartika developed a strong conviction for change from an early age. In 1904, Dewi Sartika founded the first school for native Indonesian girls, named “Sekolah Isteri” (School for Women), in Bandung. Her dedication to breaking gender barriers in education was revolutionary during a time when women’s education was often overlooked. Sartika’s advocacy extended beyond school establishments. She actively campaigned for the importance of educating women, emphasizing its positive impact on families and society. On 16 January 1904, she founded a school named Sakola Istri at Bandung Regency’s Pendopo which later was relocated to Jalan Ciguriang and the school name changed to Sekolah Kaoetamaan Isteri (Wife Eminency School) in 1910. Dewi Sartika passed away on September 11, 1947, leaving behind a transformative legacy in Indonesian education.
