Desperate Indian Workers Scammed in UK Care Visa Scheme
Arun George, a victim of a fraudulent care worker visa scheme, lost his life savings of ยฃ15,000 ($19,460) in a bid to secure a better future for his family in the UK. Alongside hundreds of others from Kerala, he faced exploitation by recruiters and care homes, leaving many in dire financial straits. Despite the UK government’s acknowledgment of these scams, justice remains elusive for the victims.
Promises of a Better Life Turned Sour
Arun George, who wishes to remain anonymous due to the stigma of returning home without a job, invested his hard-earned savings to secure a care worker position for his wife in the UK. The couple was motivated by the hope of providing a better life for their special needs child. However, upon arrival, they found no job opportunities. “We kept chasing the care home, but they made up excuses,” George recounted. After a few months of unpaid training and only three days of actual work, they were forced to return to India. George’s experience is not unique. Many individuals from Kerala have fallen victim to similar schemes, with recruiters and care homes exploiting their desperation for employment. Alchita Care, the company that sponsored George’s visa, has not responded to inquiries regarding these allegations. The Home Office revoked their sponsorship license last year, indicating serious issues within the organization.
Survival Amid Exploitation
Another victim, Sridevi (a pseudonym), echoed George’s sentiments. She paid ยฃ15,000 for her visa sponsorship and incurred an additional ยฃ3,000 in travel expenses to the UK. Now, she struggles to make ends meet, often relying on charity for basic necessities. “I can’t even pay my rent,” she lamented. Unlike the stable job she was promised, her current work is unpredictable, with long hours and minimal pay. The exploitation of care workers has surged since the UK added care workers to its shortage occupation list during the COVID-19 pandemic. This change allowed for the recruitment of overseas workers, but it has also opened the door for unscrupulous agents to take advantage of vulnerable individuals. Baiju Thittala, a Labour party member and mayor of Cambridge, has represented numerous victims, highlighting the challenges they face in seeking justice due to the cross-border nature of these scams.
Collective Losses and Unanswered Questions
In Kothamangalam, a town in Kerala, around 30 individuals reported losing millions of dollars to a single agent, Henry Poulos, and his agency, Grace International. They accused him of providing fake job offers and sponsorship letters, leading them to take on significant debt. Shilpa, one of the victims, took out a bank loan at a high interest rate to pay Poulos, only to find herself in a precarious financial situation. “I thought the UK would offer a good future for my three daughters, but now I am struggling to pay their school fees,” she said. Despite numerous complaints, Poulos remains untraceable, and local authorities have sealed his offices in response to the outcry. The police in Kerala are investigating these cases and are prepared to collaborate with international agencies to address the issue. However, many victims are left feeling hopeless, as the financial and emotional toll of these scams continues to weigh heavily on their lives.
Government Response and Ongoing Challenges
The UK government has acknowledged the exploitation of care workers, admitting that many were offered visas under false pretenses and paid below the minimum wage. In response, regulations have been tightened, including an increase in the minimum salary for care workers and restrictions on bringing dependents. Since July 2022, approximately 450 licenses for recruiting foreign workers in the care sector have been revoked. Despite these measures, the victims of these scams are still waiting for justice. The Home Office has prohibited sponsors from passing on costs to prospective employees, but many individuals have already suffered significant financial losses. As investigations continue, the plight of those affected remains a pressing issue, with many still hoping for a resolution to their struggles.
