Deputy Secretary-General Urges Increased Ambition for Successful Food Systems Transformation Accelerator

It is a critical time for global food systems as leaders gather in Addis Ababa for the second Food Systems Summit+4 Stocktake. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasized the urgency of transforming food systems to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during her opening remarks. She acknowledged the leadership of several nations and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition in driving this essential conversation forward. With the 2030 deadline approaching, Mohammed highlighted the need for swift action and collaboration to overcome challenges in financing and implementation.

Urgent Need for Food Systems Transformation

Amina Mohammed opened her remarks by underscoring the pressing need for food systems transformation, which she described as a vital lever for achieving the SDGs. She expressed gratitude to the governments of Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, and Bangladesh for their leadership in this area. The Deputy Secretary-General noted that while many countries are making significant efforts, they cannot succeed in isolation. The interconnected nature of food systems is crucial for advancing health, economic prosperity, and climate resilience. With the target year of 2030 fast approaching, the urgency for action has never been greater.

Challenges in Implementation

Despite strong political will in various regions, Mohammed pointed out that the implementation of food systems strategies faces significant hurdles. Slow-moving financial mechanisms, fragmented partnerships, and the complexity of translating ambitious goals into actionable plans are major obstacles. She emphasized that the newly launched Food Systems Transformation Accelerator aims to address these challenges by providing practical support to countries. This initiative seeks to facilitate the flow of funding to the right stakeholders, including smallholder farmers, youth, women-led businesses, and underserved communities.

Streamlining Financing and Partnerships

The Accelerator is designed to simplify the complex financing landscape that many governments currently navigate. By offering guidance and support, it aims to help countries build effective pipelines for action. Mohammed assured attendees that the initiative would be integrated into the UN development system, ensuring that support is tailored to meet national priorities. She highlighted the importance of utilizing existing mechanisms, such as the Joint SDG Fund, to transform the Accelerator from a concept into a tool that delivers tangible results on the ground.

Call to Action for Collaboration

In her closing remarks, Mohammed emphasized the necessity of collaboration among various sectors to achieve food systems transformation. She stated that no single entity can tackle these challenges alone; deep cooperation among public, private, and financial sectors is essential. The Accelerator is envisioned as a collaborative platform where institutions can converge to share ideas and resources. Mohammed urged all participants to commit to refining the model, scaling up ambitions, and ensuring the initiative’s success. She concluded by recognizing the hard work of partners involved and called for a collective commitment to not only support the Accelerator but to actively engage with it for meaningful change.
