Department of Consumer Affair’s to launch Jago Grahak Jago App

The Department of Consumer Affairs is set to launch three innovative applications on National Consumers Day, December 24, 2024. These applications, named ‘Jago Grahak Jago App,’ ‘Jagriti App,’ and ‘Jagriti Dashboard,’ aim to empower consumers in the digital marketplace. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen consumer protection and curb unfair practices in e-commerce.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has been proactive in addressing issues related to deceptive design patterns, commonly referred to as dark patterns. In 2023, the CCPA issued guidelines to prevent and regulate these practices, which can mislead consumers and violate their rights. The introduction of these applications is a significant step towards creating a safer online shopping environment.

Understanding Dark Patterns in E-Commerce

Dark patterns are deceptive design strategies used by some online platforms to manipulate consumer behavior. These tactics can lead consumers to make decisions they might not otherwise make, often resulting in financial loss or unwanted subscriptions. After intervention from the CCPA, the company modified its approach, allowing consumers to opt-in rather than being automatically charged.

Similarly, “Confirm Shaming” was identified in the IndiGo Airlines app, where the wording used to decline additional services was misleading. The CCPA’s intervention led to clearer language that respects consumer choice. These examples highlight the importance of vigilance in online transactions and the need for regulatory measures to protect consumers.

The upcoming applications are designed to enhance consumer awareness and provide tools for reporting unfair practices.
