Department of Atomic Energy’s Special Campaign 4.0
The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), which includes 12 Constituent Units, 11 Aided Institutions, and 5 Public Sector Units (PSUs), has successfully concluded its Special Campaign 4.0. Building on the momentum of previous campaigns, this initiative involved DAE’s full participation and aimed to promote cleanliness and responsible resource management across its units nationwide. DAE’s campaign included cleanliness drives, public awareness events, and organizational initiatives targeting efficient record management, scrap disposal, and optimal use of resources.
Campaign Highlights and Achievements
Special Campaign 4.0 saw significant outcomes across DAE’s Constituent Units, PSUs, and Aided Institutions, including:
- File Management and Disposal: DAE reviewed 51,255 files, weeding out 50,599 of them.
- Cleanliness Campaigns: A total of 146 cleanliness campaigns took place across DAE’s facilities, both internally and in surrounding communities.
- Revenue Generation and Space Optimization: Scrap disposal generated approximately INR 53,24,573 in revenue, freeing up about 19,579 square feet of space.
Public Awareness and Engagement Activities
DAE’s campaign extended beyond administrative areas, involving the public through awareness and engagement activities such as:
- Health Awareness Program: Conducted at Tata Memorial Centre in Guwahati.
- Street Play (Nukkad Natak): Organized by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in Mumbai to raise awareness about cleanliness.
- Tree Plantation Drive: Held by the Safety Research Institute in Kalpakkam, reinforcing the campaign’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Best Practices and Sustainable Initiatives
DAE’s Special Campaign 4.0 also highlighted some best practices from its constituent institutions that contribute to long-term sustainability and resource efficiency:
- Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gujarat:
- Composting Organic Waste: IPR uses organic waste like dry leaves and grass from its campus to produce compost, enriching soil and supporting the growth of 650 newly planted trees.
- Jungle Clearing Initiative: By removing weeds between the IPR building and student hostel, DAE has facilitated easier transit and reduced insect breeding areas.
- Plasma Activated Water (PAW) Technology: Developed and commercialized by IPR, this innovation simulates rainwater exposed to lightning. PAW is nitrogen-rich, benefiting plant growth, extending the shelf life of produce like lemons, and serving as an antimicrobial agent for dairy container sterilization.
- Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC):
- Mobile Electronic Medical Record System: ACTREC has created an Android app to provide patients with easy access to registration details, medical reports, appointments, billing information, and feedback options.
“Udgam Se Ant Tak” Initiative by VECC Kolkata
Aligned with India’s Namami Gange mission, the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) in Kolkata launched the “Udgam Se Ant Tak” campaign for Ganga River conservation. The initiative spans from Gangotri Glacier to Sagar Island and aims to cover the river’s entire length in three years, addressing pollution, ecological balance, and bank preservation.
In October 2024, a five-member VECC team participated in cleanup activities at Rishikesh’s Triveni Ghat, collecting 60-70 kg of waste with assistance from locals, safai mitras, and pilgrims. They further conducted a four-day high-altitude cleanup along the 40-km trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh, gathering significant non-biodegradable waste from areas including Chirbasa and Bhojbasa. The collected waste was then transported to Gangotri for systematic disposal. VECC team members also delivered lectures at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi on sustainable waste management practices.
Social Media and Outreach
To maximize campaign visibility, DAE’s social media team actively engaged with the public through 11 posts across platforms, using #SpecialCampaign4.0. Additionally, the Department released two statements through the Press Information Bureau (PIB), emphasizing the campaign’s objectives and achievements.
Conclusion
The Department of Atomic Energy’s Special Campaign 4.0 demonstrates a significant commitment to cleanliness, resource optimization, and environmental sustainability. DAE’s initiatives have set a foundation for continued progress, aligning with broader government initiatives and making strides toward a cleaner, more efficient future. With a strong focus on both operational improvements and public engagement, DAE aims to carry forward the momentum into upcoming campaigns.
