Delhi’s Dwarka Expressway: Pioneering the Next-Generation Digital Highway

India has officially launched its first Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) project on the Dwarka Expressway in Delhi, marking a significant step towards modernizing highway infrastructure. This initiative aligns with the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) 2023 guidelines, aiming to enhance road safety and traffic management. The ATMS covers a total distance of 56.46 kilometers, including a 28-km stretch of NH-48, and is designed to set a national standard for artificial intelligence-driven traffic administration.

Key Features of the ATMS

The ATMS project incorporates several advanced features aimed at improving traffic monitoring and enforcement. Central to this system are traffic monitoring cameras and video incident detection systems. Amrit Singha, Chief Product Officer of the Indian Highways Management Company Ltd (IHMCL), highlighted that the ATMS can identify various traffic rule violations. This includes detecting incidents such as seatbelt non-compliance, triple riding, and speeding. Singha noted that the system is capable of identifying approximately 14 different types of traffic incidents, all of which are subject to penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act.

In addition to monitoring, the ATMS also plays a crucial role in public awareness campaigns regarding road safety. The NHAI has implemented various initiatives to educate road users about safe driving practices. By leveraging technology, the ATMS aims to enhance the overall safety of the roads for all users.

Infrastructure and Technology Integration

The ATMS infrastructure includes a comprehensive array of components designed to facilitate efficient traffic management. This encompasses a Traffic Monitoring Camera System (TMCS) featuring 110 high-resolution PTZ cameras strategically placed at 1-km intervals for continuous surveillance. Additionally, the system integrates a Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES), a Vehicle Actuated Speed Display System (VASD), and Variable Message Signboards (VMS). A Central Control Room serves as the operational hub, coordinating all activities related to traffic management.

The Command Centre acts as the digital brain of the corridor, enabling quick responses to emergencies such as accidents, fog conditions, or road obstructions. This data-driven approach is expected to significantly reduce response times and enhance the safety of commutes along the corridor.

National Benchmark for Traffic Management

The implementation of the ATMS is being hailed as a national benchmark for traffic management and road safety protocols in India. By utilizing artificial intelligence, the system aims to streamline traffic flow and improve overall road safety. The integration with the NIC E-challan portal allows for efficient communication of traffic violations to the relevant police authorities, ensuring that offenders are promptly addressed.

The NHAI has emphasized that the ATMS not only enhances traffic management but also contributes to the broader goal of creating safer highways across the country. As this project unfolds, it is expected to serve as a model for future traffic management systems in India, showcasing the potential of technology in improving road safety and efficiency.
