Delhi-NCR Extends PM Emission Standards Deadline for Industries
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has announced a new timeline for the implementation of revised Particulate Matter (PM) emission standards for industries in Delhi-NCR. The updated standards, which set a uniform emission limit of 50 mg/Nm³, are now set to take effect on October 1, 2026. This decision follows a thorough review of feedback from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and various industrial stakeholders regarding current compliance challenges.
The original directive, known as Direction No. 98, was established on February 20, 2026. It aimed to enforce stricter PM emission standards across selected industrial sectors, driven by studies from the CPCB and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. The CAQM maintained that these revised standards are critical for curtailing industrial emissions and enhancing air quality in the region.
Collaboration for Compliance
Since the initial announcement, the CPCB has collaborated with state pollution control boards and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to assist industries in meeting the new standards. Efforts included directing agencies to support compliance and developing a specialized online portal for monitoring the installation and enhancement of Air Pollution Control Devices (APCDs). However, various industry associations pointed out significant challenges such as delays in procuring and installing necessary equipment, as well as limited resources for compliance testing.
Amendment for Effective Implementation
In light of these challenges, the CPCB recommended an extension of the compliance timeline. After reviewing the concerns raised, the CAQM agreed that a limited extension would enable industries to achieve compliance effectively. Therefore, the amendment to Direction No. 98 allows for the revised standards to take effect on October 1, 2026, for all industries covered under the directive.
This adjustment is designed to grant industries additional time to install, retrofit, and assess the necessary APCDs, while ensuring adherence to the strict emission standards by the revised deadline. All other stipulations outlined in the original Direction No. 98 will remain in place.
