The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for a significant expansion of the Delhi Metro network. The newly approved Rithala-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli) corridor is part of the Phase IV project. Spanning 26.463 kilometers, this corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Delhi and neighboring Haryana. The project is expected to be completed within four years and will significantly improve transportation options for residents in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Project Overview and Financials
The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor comes with a hefty price tag of โน6,230 crore. The implementation will be overseen by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC), which operates under a 50:50 Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) involving the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This financial structure aims to ensure efficient management and execution of the project.
The corridor will serve as an extension of the existing Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) to Rithala line, which is part of the Red Line. The new line will consist of 21 elevated stations, providing seamless access to various neighborhoods in northwestern Delhi, including Narela, Bawana, and parts of Rohini. This expansion is not just about adding more stations; it is about creating a more integrated and efficient public transport system that can alleviate road congestion and reduce pollution levels caused by motor vehicles.
Enhanced Connectivity for the NCR
Once completed, the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor will connect the Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Nathupur in Haryana. This connectivity will significantly enhance travel options for commuters across the NCR. The corridor will facilitate easier access to various employment hubs, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, thereby improving the quality of life for residents.
The new line will also contribute to the overall economic growth of the region. Future Prospects and Ongoing Developments
The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor is part of a larger Phase IV project that includes three priority corridors totaling 65.202 kilometers and 45 stations. As of now, over 56% of the construction for these corridors has been completed, with a target completion date set for March 2026. Additionally, two more corridors, covering 20.762 kilometers, have been approved and are currently in the pre-tendering phase.
