Delhi Metro’s New Corridor: A Game Changer

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a significant expansion of the Delhi Metro. The new Rithala-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli) corridor is part of the Phase IV project. This corridor will span 26.463 kilometers and aims to enhance connectivity between Delhi and neighboring Haryana. The project is set to be completed within four years, with a total estimated cost of โ‚น6,230 crore. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) will oversee its implementation, operating under a 50:50 Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Enhancing Connectivity in the NCR

The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor will significantly improve transportation in the northwestern parts of Delhi. It will extend the existing Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) – Rithala corridor, which is part of the Red Line. This new line will connect key areas such as Narela, Bawana, and parts of Rohini. The corridor will feature 21 elevated stations, making it easier for commuters to access these regions.

Once completed, the corridor will connect the Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Nathupur in Haryana. This connection will enhance the overall transportation network in the National Capital Region (NCR), making it more efficient for residents and visitors alike. The improved connectivity is expected to facilitate smoother travel, reduce congestion, and ultimately contribute to the economic growth of the region.

Environmental Benefits and Economic Growth

The new corridor is not just about improving connectivity; it also aims to address environmental concerns. By providing an efficient public transport option, the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor will help reduce road congestion. Current Status and Future Prospects

Construction of the Phase IV project, which includes three priority corridors, is already underway. As of now, over 56% of the construction has been completed. The entire Phase IV project will cover 65.202 kilometers and include 45 stations. The corridors are expected to be completed in stages by March 2026. Additionally, two more corridors, spanning 20.762 kilometers, have been approved and are currently in the pre-tendering stages.

The Delhi Metro has become an essential part of the city’s infrastructure, catering to an average of 6.4 million passenger journeys daily. With a total of 12 metro lines covering approximately 392 kilometers and 288 stations, it stands as the largest metro network in India and one of the largest in the world. The Rithala-Narela-Nathupur corridor will further solidify the Delhi Metro’s role as a lifeline for the city, enhancing its reputation for punctuality, reliability, and safety.
