Delhi Air Quality Improves: Stage-II Restrictions Lifted

Delhi’s air quality has shown significant improvement recently, prompting authorities to reassess the restrictions in place to combat pollution. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 186 today, indicating a downward trend in pollution levels. This article explores the recent developments regarding air quality in Delhi, the decisions made by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), and the ongoing efforts to maintain cleaner air in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Current Air Quality Status

The AQI of Delhi has been recorded at 186, which is a notable improvement compared to previous days. This figure is 114 points below the critical threshold of 300, which would have triggered Stage-II restrictions as per directives from the Supreme Court. The Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) met to review the air quality data and meteorological forecasts from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The favorable weather conditions have contributed to better dispersion of pollutants. Factors such as increased mixing height and ventilation coefficient have played a crucial role in this improvement. The IMD and IITM predict that the AQI will likely remain in the moderate to lower-end of the poor category in the coming days. This positive trend has led the CAQM Sub-Committee to unanimously decide to revoke Stage-II actions across the NCR, effective immediately.

Implementation of Stage-I Measures

While Stage-II restrictions have been lifted, the CAQM has decided to maintain Stage-I measures across the NCR. These measures will continue to be implemented, monitored, and reviewed by relevant agencies to ensure that air quality does not deteriorate. The Commission emphasizes the importance of strict vigilance and intensified actions under Stage-I to prevent any further decline in air quality.

The agencies responsible for enforcing these measures are urged to remain proactive. They must ensure compliance with the provisions of Stage-I of the GRAP. This includes monitoring pollution sources and implementing strategies to mitigate emissions. The CAQM aims to prevent the need for re-imposing Stage-II restrictions, which would have more severe implications for daily life in the NCR.

Community Involvement and Responsibility

The CAQM has called upon citizens and residents of Delhi to actively participate in maintaining air quality. Community involvement is crucial in the fight against pollution. The Commission encourages everyone to adhere to the guidelines set forth under Stage-I of the GRAP. Simple actions, such as reducing vehicle use, avoiding open burning, and using cleaner fuels, can collectively make a significant difference.

Public awareness campaigns can also play a vital role in educating residents about the importance of air quality and the steps they can take to contribute. The CAQM emphasizes that a collaborative effort between government agencies and the public is essential to sustain the improvements in air quality.

Future Monitoring and Adjustments

The CAQM Sub-Committee will continue to monitor the air quality situation closely. Regular reviews will be conducted based on the latest data and forecasts from the IMD and IITM. This ongoing assessment will help determine if further actions are necessary to maintain or improve air quality in the NCR.

The Commission has made the current schedule of GRAP accessible on its official website, allowing the public to stay informed about the measures in place. The CAQM remains committed to ensuring that air quality in Delhi continues to improve, and it will take appropriate actions as needed based on the evolving situation.
