Deendayal Port Authority Launches India’s First 1 MW Make-in-India Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla

In a significant advancement for India’s clean energy sector, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla has inaugurated the country’s first Make-in-India 1 Megawatt Green Hydrogen Plant. The facility was officially launched by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, alongside other dignitaries. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions and marks a pivotal step in the nation’s green transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership.
Inauguration of the Green Hydrogen Plant
The commissioning ceremony for the Green Hydrogen Plant took place today, with prominent figures in attendance, including Minister of State Shri Shantanu Thakur and Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri T.K. Ramachandran. The project is part of a larger initiative that aims to establish a 10 MW Green Hydrogen Plant, with the first 1 MW module completed in just four months. This rapid execution sets a new standard for project implementation within India’s green hydrogen landscape. Minister Sonowal emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating that it exemplifies the speed, scale, and skill envisioned under the Maritime India Vision 2030.
Significance of the Green Hydrogen Facility
The newly commissioned plant positions the Deendayal Port Authority as the first port in India to operate a megawatt-scale Green Hydrogen facility. It has the capacity to produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This production capability is expected to significantly contribute to maritime decarbonization and promote sustainable operations at the port. Minister of State Shri Shantanu Thakur highlighted the achievement as a proud moment for both Gujarat and the entire nation, reinforcing India’s leadership in clean energy and self-reliance.
Commitment to Sustainable Initiatives
Minister Sonowal commended the DPA for its ongoing dedication to green initiatives, referencing the earlier introduction of India’s first Make-in-India all-electric Green Tug. He praised the establishment of a fully self-reliant hydrogen ecosystem, developed entirely by Indian engineers, and encouraged other ports to adopt similar eco-friendly technologies. The Minister expressed gratitude towards the leadership of DPA and the engineering team from L&T for their remarkable execution of this complex project.
Future Prospects for Green Energy in India
As India progresses towards a greener maritime future, the Deendayal Port Authority is setting a benchmark for innovation and transformation in alignment with national priorities and global sustainability goals. The commissioning of the Green Hydrogen Plant not only reflects India’s commitment to clean energy but also serves as an inspiration for other ports to embrace innovative and sustainable practices. The DPA’s efforts are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of clean energy in the country, paving the way for further advancements in the sector.
