Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Drops ‘Project Orion’ Name, Moves Forward

The highly anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has officially entered its pre-production phase, as confirmed by CD Projekt on Wednesday. The game, previously known by the codename “Project Orion,” will now be referred to as Cyberpunk 2, although it remains uncertain if this will be its final title upon release. Announced in 2022, the sequel is being developed by CD Projekt Red’s North America studio located in Boston, and while no specific release date has been provided, it is expected to be several years away from launch.

Cyberpunk 2 Progresses to Pre-Production

In its first-quarter 2025 earnings report, CD Projekt provided an update on the development of Cyberpunk 2, indicating that the project has successfully transitioned from the conceptual phase to pre-production. The company stated, โ€œSeveral weeks ago, the CD PROJEKT RED team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase.โ€ This marks a significant milestone for the development team, which has expanded from 84 members in February to 96 by the end of April.

While the game is now officially referred to as Cyberpunk 2, CD Projekt Red’s senior PR manager, Ola Sondej, clarified that this name is not necessarily the final title. Instead, it signifies that the game is part of the broader Cyberpunk universe. CD Projekt is currently juggling multiple projects, with a majority of its 730 employees focused on The Witcher 4, which has entered full-scale production. The Witcher 4 development team has grown to 422 members, while a multiplayer spinoff titled Project Sirius has 48 developers working on it, and 19 employees are dedicated to a new intellectual property called Project Hadar.

New City and Features in the Sequel

Although a release timeline for Cyberpunk 2 has not been disclosed, some intriguing details have emerged. Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the original Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, recently revealed that the sequel will introduce a second city alongside Night City, the iconic setting from the first game. Pondsmith described this new city as โ€œChicago gone wrong,โ€ hinting at a darker and more complex environment for players to explore. These revelations have heightened anticipation for the sequel, as fans eagerly await more information about its features and storyline.

As CD Projekt continues to develop Cyberpunk 2, the company has remained tight-lipped about specific gameplay elements and narrative details. However, the excitement surrounding the project is palpable, especially given the success of the original game and its expansions.

Phantom Liberty Achieves Major Sales Milestone

In the same earnings report, CD Projekt announced that sales of the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, have surpassed 10 million copies. The company expressed satisfaction with this achievement, particularly as they prepare to expand their Cyberpunk portfolio with the upcoming release of the game’s Ultimate Edition for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console on June 5.

Additionally, CD Projekt highlighted the enduring popularity of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and has sold over 60 million copies, solidifying its status as one of the best-selling games of all time. The company reported consolidated sales revenue of PLN 226 million (approximately 514 crore) and a net profit of PLN 86 million (around Rs. 195 crore) for the first quarter of 2025, showcasing a strong financial performance as it continues to develop new titles.
