CSIR-NIScPR and CSIR-NIO Conduct National Workshop on Emerging Research

The CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) in New Delhi, in partnership with the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO) in Goa, hosted a successful one-day National Workshop on May 27, 2025. The workshop, titled โ€œEmerging Research Frontiers in Marine and Allied Sciences with Spotlight on the Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences (IJMS),โ€ gathered prominent scientists, researchers, and policymakers to explore advancements in marine sciences, promote indigenous scholarly publishing, and discuss sustainable research practices aimed at fostering an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Ceremonial Opening and Key Addresses

The workshop began with a ceremonial lamp lighting, followed by a welcoming address from Dr. Puspanjali Tripathy, Principal Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR. Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, the Director of CSIR-NIScPR, emphasized the significance of self-reliant scholarly publishing in her opening remarks. She highlighted the journal’s commitment to being free for both authors and readers, adopting a green and open-access model. Prof. Aggarwal noted that the workshop aimed to encourage young scientists and academicians to publish in the Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences (IJMS), which is recognized as a leading journal in marine sciences in India.

Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director of CSIR-NIO, also addressed the attendees, underscoring the vital role of marine research in tackling global challenges. He stressed the importance of the blue economy in India’s growth and the need for indigenous journals to achieve international standards and recognition. The keynote address by Prof. Harilal B. Menon, Vice-Chancellor of Goa University, set a collaborative tone for the event, urging continued research that addresses both foundational and applied aspects of marine sciences.

Insights from Experts

The workshop featured a range of expert speakers, including Chief Guest Dr. Harsh K. Gupta, Former Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Dr. Gupta proposed that the Indian Journal of Geo-Marine Sciences should publish a special issue highlighting India’s achievements in marine sciences over the past 25 years. He encouraged collaboration among experts to enhance the quality of publications in the journal.

Dr. Charu Verma, Chief Scientist and Head of the Research Journalโ€™s Division at CSIR-NIScPR, delivered the vote of thanks for the inaugural session. A special talk by Dr. Nirmalya Majumdar, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR, showcased the institute’s contributions to promoting indigenous scholarly publishing. The technical sessions included insights from Dr. Dinesh Velip, Editor of IJMS, who discussed the journal’s role in advancing marine research, and Dr. Bhavya Khanna from MoES, who provided guidance on effective scholarly writing and communication.

Panel Discussion on Marine Research

A highlight of the workshop was the panel discussion titled โ€œLeaderโ€™s Dialogue: Blue Horizons and Beyond – Research Orientation, Policy, Sustainability, and Scientific Leadership in Contemporary Research for an Atmanirbhar Bharat.โ€ Chaired by Dr. S. Satheesh Chandra Shenoi, the panel included distinguished experts who explored strategies and policies to advance marine research and achieve sustainable development goals. The discussion showcased current developments in marine research and identified future opportunities for collaboration.

The invited talk by Prof. Devika P. Madalli, Director of the INFLIBNET Centre, focused on the transformative potential of open science and equitable access to scholarly literature. The valedictory session concluded with a summary presentation by Dr. Dinesh Velip and closing remarks from Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, reinforcing the workshop’s commitment to advancing scientific excellence and promoting indigenous scholarly publishing.

The workshop successfully highlighted the importance of collaborative research, effective communication, and sustainable practices in marine and allied sciences, reaffirming the dedication of CSIR-NIScPR and CSIR-NIO to fostering a robust scientific community in India.
