CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), New Delhi, celebrated its 79th Foundation Day
The CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL) in New Delhi marked its 79th Foundation Day on January 4, 2025. This significant event commemorates the establishment of one of India’s leading research institutes under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The foundation stone of CSIR-NPL was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on the same date in 1947. The Role of CSIR-NPL in National Development
CSIR-NPL serves as the National Metrology Institute (NMI) of India. Its primary responsibility is to develop, maintain, and disseminate national measurement standards. Highlights from the Foundation Day Celebration
The Foundation Day celebration featured esteemed guests, including Prof. Veezhinathan Kamakoti, the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), who served as the Chief Guest. During the ceremony, Prof. Venugopal Achanta, the Director of CSIR-NPL, addressed the audience. He discussed the institute’s achievements and ongoing research projects. He emphasized the importance of CSIR-NPL’s role in enhancing India’s metrology capabilities.
Prof. Kamakoti delivered a lecture titled “Glancing into Metrology,” where he underscored the significance of metrology for the VIKSIT BHARAT mission of the Government of India. He shared insights on quantum metrology and its applications in various fields, including computing and communication. His discussion highlighted the challenges and opportunities in developing quantum technologies in India. He also stressed the need for collaboration between CSIR-NPL and IIT Madras to advance indigenous semiconductor and quantum technology development.
Collaborative Efforts and New Initiatives
During the Foundation Day event, CSIR-NPL signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with IIT Madras and CSIR-CIMAP. These agreements aim to foster academic and research collaborations. The partnership with IIT Madras will enhance research capabilities, while the collaboration with CSIR-CIMAP focuses on producing Bharatiya Nirdeshak Dravya (BND), which are certified reference materials in the area of plant-based materials.
Additionally, CSIR-NPL introduced new BNDs, including Lanthanum Hexaboride Powder and White Portland Cement Standard. These materials are crucial for calibration standards in various applications. The development of these standards showcases CSIR-NPL’s commitment to advancing measurement technologies in India. Dr. S. R. Dhakate, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NPL, concluded the event with a formal vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and partners.
The 79th Foundation Day of CSIR-NPL not only celebrated its rich history but also highlighted its ongoing commitment to advancing metrology and supporting national development through innovative research and collaboration.
