One of the standout features of WAVES is the Create in India Challenges. These challenges have garnered over 70,000 registrations and launched 31 competitions, all designed to encourage creativity and innovation. Currently, 25 challenges remain open for participation, with 22 attracting entries from around the world. This initiative not only showcases talent but also emphasizes India’s growing influence in the global entertainment landscape.
The WAVES VFX Challenge (WAFX)
The WAVES VFX Challenge, also known as the WAFX Competition, is a nationwide search for the best visual effects (VFX) talent in India. This competition is organized in partnership with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Association of Bangalore Animation Industry (ABAI). It marks a significant milestone in India’s creative landscape, especially under the inaugural Create in India Season 1.
The WAFX Competition invites participants to showcase their skills in VFX by creating innovative and engaging visual effects sequences. This competition aims to highlight the importance of VFX in storytelling and entertainment. By encouraging participants to think creatively, the WAFX Competition seeks to elevate the standard of VFX in India and provide a platform for emerging talent to shine.
Competition Overview: Daily Life Superhero Theme
The theme for this year’s WAFX Competition is “Daily Life Superheroes.” Participants are encouraged to create visual effects sequences or short films that depict superheroes tackling everyday tasks with humor and creativity. This theme allows for a wide range of interpretations, from superheroes helping with household chores to solving daily problems in imaginative ways.
The competition is divided into two categories: the Student Category and the Professional Category. The Student Category is open to school and university students, requiring proof of enrollment. The Professional Category welcomes working professionals in VFX, animation, and filmmaking, including freelancers and studio artists. This structure ensures that both emerging and established talents can participate and showcase their abilities.
Competition Structure: From Qualifiers to Grand Finale
The WAFX Competition consists of several stages, starting with the Qualifier Round. In this round, participants must register and submit a 30-second VFX video based on the “Daily Life Superhero” theme. A jury will then shortlist the top 10 students and 10 professionals from each zone for the Zonal Contests.
The Zonal Contests will take place in four locations: Chandigarh (North Zone), Mumbai (West Zone), Kolkata (East Zone), and Bengaluru (South Zone). During these live competitions, contestants will have a 10-hour challenge to create a VFX reel using provided stock videos, 3D assets, and FX libraries. Winners from each category will earn an all-expenses-paid opportunity to compete in the Grand Finale at WAVES 2025.
The Grand Finale will see zonal winners compete in a 24-hour challenge at WAVES 2025. Contestants will utilize green matte screens, 3D assets, and FX libraries to create a VFX shot. The Grand Champion in each category will receive a cash prize and exclusive goodies, making this competition a prestigious event for VFX enthusiasts.

The WAVES VFX Challenge not only highlights the importance of visual effects in storytelling but also fosters a sense of community among VFX professionals and enthusiasts.
