Community Radio Challenge Launches at WAVES 2025

The Community Radio Content Challenge has officially been launched as part of the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES), set to take place from May 1-4, 2025, in Mumbai. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Community Radio Association (CRA), aims to showcase the innovative contributions of community radio stations across India. With 246 participants already registered, including 14 international entries, the challenge seeks to empower local voices and address region-specific issues.
WAVES Summit: A Global Media Hub
The WAVES Summit is designed to be a premier platform for the convergence of the Media and Entertainment (M&E) sector. This first edition aims to connect global industry leaders with Indian talent, fostering collaboration and innovation. The event will focus on four key pillars: Broadcasting & Infotainment, AVGC-XR, Digital Media & Innovation, and Films. By bringing together creators, technologists, and industry leaders, WAVES aims to showcase the future of India’s entertainment landscape.
The Community Radio Content Challenge falls under the Broadcasting and Infotainment pillar, celebrating the essential role of community radio in fostering informed and engaged communities. This initiative highlights the power of local media to address pressing issues and promote social change.
Objectives of the Community Radio Content Challenge
The Community Radio Content Challenge is designed to recognize and celebrate the innovative work of community radio stations. It encourages collaboration and aims to inspire creativity among participants. By focusing on the unique contributions of community radio, the challenge seeks to empower local communities and amplify their voices.
The competition invites entries in five distinct categories, each targeting critical aspects of community development. These categories include Public Health and Safety, Education and Literacy, Women and Child Development/Social Justice and Advocacy, Agriculture and Rural Development, and Cultural Preservation. Each category aims to highlight the impactful work being done by community radio stations to drive positive change in their respective areas.
Registration and Submission Guidelines
Registration for the Community Radio Content Challenge is open until February 28, 2025. All registered Community Radio Stations (CRS) in India, approved by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, are eligible to participate. Each station may submit only one entry in one of the five categories. Multiple submissions will lead to disqualification.
Submissions must meet specific criteria, including format and duration. Each entry should be a half-hour program or a single episode from a series. Eligible formats include talk shows, documentaries, music programs, educational content, and live shows. Supporting materials are also required to demonstrate the content’s impact.
Evaluation and Final Selection Process
The evaluation of submissions will be conducted by a panel of experts, including media personalities and representatives from the Community Radio Association of India (CRAI). The assessment will follow a two-stage evaluation process to ensure fairness and comprehensiveness.
The WAVES Competition aims to highlight the vital contributions of community radio stations in India. By recognizing their efforts, the initiative underscores the importance of local media in empowering communities and addressing critical issues. The Community Radio Content Challenge serves as a valuable platform for celebrating the innovative work of these stations and fostering collaboration within the sector.
