Co-founder of Koo Launches New Photo Sharing App

In a landscape where photo-sharing apps are evolving rapidly, a new contender has emerged. Mayank Bidawatka, co-founder of the now-defunct Indian social network Koo, has launched PicSee, a photo-sharing app designed to simplify the process of sharing images with friends. Released on both iOS and Android, PicSee automatically detects and shares photos of friends from users’ camera rolls, eliminating the need for traditional messaging platforms. This innovative approach aims to enhance personal photo sharing while addressing privacy concerns.

Innovative Features of PicSee

PicSee introduces a unique method for sharing photos by automatically identifying images of friends stored in users’ camera rolls. Bidawatka explained that many people have countless photos of their friends that often go unshared. The app uses facial recognition technology to scan users’ galleries and select relevant images. Once friends are connected on PicSee, users can send sharing requests. Upon acceptance, the app sends an initial batch of photos, and subsequently, it prompts users to share new images as they are detected. If users do not send photos immediately, the app will automatically dispatch them after 24 hours, although users can review and choose which photos to share beforehand.

The app also allows users to recall photos after sending them, ensuring that images can be removed from the recipient’s view if necessary. All photos are stored locally on the user’s device, and PicSee does not store any data in the cloud, prioritizing user privacy.

Privacy and Security Measures

Privacy is a significant focus for PicSee. The app processes facial recognition on the user’s device, ensuring that sensitive data is not transmitted to external servers. When sharing photos, PicSee establishes an encrypted connection, safeguarding the images during transmission. Additionally, the app includes filters to block NSFW content and prevents users from taking screenshots, further enhancing security. Bidawatka emphasized that these measures are crucial for building trust among users who may be hesitant to share personal images.

Despite these robust privacy controls, PicSee faces challenges in user adoption. Many individuals already utilize established platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat for photo sharing. Convincing users to switch to PicSee for a more selective sharing experience may prove difficult, especially when they are accustomed to their current methods of communication.

Addressing User Needs and Future Developments

While PicSee offers an innovative approach to photo sharing, it does not fully address all user needs. For instance, the app may not resolve situations where friends request specific photos from events they attended together. To tackle this, PicSee is developing additional social engagement features, including a chat function that allows users to comment on shared images.

The company is also exploring ways to enhance user experience by enabling the creation and management of photo albums, suggesting albums, and integrating with popular cloud services like Google Photos and iCloud. Furthermore, PicSee plans to expand its facial recognition technology to include video content, broadening the scope of what users can share.

Funding and Future Prospects

Billion Hearts, the company behind PicSee, secured $4 million in funding last year, led by Blume Ventures, with contributions from General Catalyst and Athera Ventures. This financial backing positions PicSee to further develop its features and expand its user base. As the app continues to evolve, it aims to carve out a niche in the competitive photo-sharing market by focusing on privacy, user engagement, and innovative sharing methods.
