Cities Prepare for Monsoon with Drain Cleaning and Safety Initiatives

With the arrival of the monsoon season, cities across India are intensifying their efforts to promote cleanliness and safeguard public health through the “Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao 2025” campaign, running from July 1 to July 31. Urban local bodies are actively addressing health risks associated with the monsoon by unclogging drains, clearing waste hotspots, and promoting hygiene awareness in vulnerable areas such as slums and schools. This nationwide initiative emphasizes the importance of the โ6 Swachhata Mantrasโโclean hands, homes, neighborhoods, toilets, drains, and public spacesโwhile fostering community participation in disease prevention.
Innovative Solutions in Patna
The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a unique initiative called “Manhole Ambulances,” which are specially equipped vehicles designed for rapid on-site repairs of manholes. Each ambulance is stocked with prefabricated manhole covers, repair tools, and a dedicated response team, ensuring prompt action during rainy weather. The PMC has transformed old municipal vehicles into these functional units, building on the success of previous initiatives like Pink Toilets and Loo Cafรฉs. Currently, six ambulances are operational, one for each municipal zone, and they are connected to the PMCโs central control room. This setup allows for real-time complaint resolution through a citizen-centric grievance redressal system, enhancing urban safety and sanitation.
Delhi’s Comprehensive Monsoon Campaign
In Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated a series of impactful activities as part of its monsoon campaign. In the South Zone, Team Swachh organized a special 3-kilometer “Pinkathon” walkathon, led by 400 NCC girl cadets, to raise awareness about hygiene and sanitation during the monsoon. The campaign has also seen increased on-ground efforts, including handwashing drives in 255 schools and 206 cleaning initiatives targeting back lanes and public toilets. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is actively cleaning clogged drains to prevent waterlogging and has urged citizens to avoid disposing of waste in these areas. Additionally, comprehensive vector-borne disease surveillance and fogging operations have been conducted within the Parliament premises to mitigate health risks.
Navi Mumbai’s Community Engagement
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), in collaboration with Dnyandeep Seva Mandal High School, organized a Swachhata rally that saw participation from over 600 students, parents, teachers, and community members. This initiative aimed to promote cleanliness and public health during the monsoon. Health awareness camps were also held across 26 Urban Primary Health Centres, focusing on the prevention of malaria and dengue. Over two days, 52 camps reached more than 22,690 citizens. In addition, sanitation workers conducted extensive cleanliness drives at various locations throughout the city, reinforcing the importance of hygiene during the rainy season.
Telangana’s Comprehensive Outreach
In Telangana, a wide range of activities has been undertaken under the “Safai Apnao, Bimaari Bhagao 2025” campaign. Urban local bodies have engaged in desilting drains, conducting door-to-door awareness drives on waste segregation, and implementing anti-larvae operations to combat mosquito-borne diseases. A massive outreach program for waste segregation has reached nearly 1.3 million households across the state. To address health risks associated with the monsoon, over 14,210 kilometers of stormwater drains and nallahs have been desilted, and more than 500 overhead water tanks have been cleaned to ensure access to safe drinking water. Health camps have benefited over 8,500 frontline workers, while 140 composting pits have been established in schools to promote waste-to-manure conversion among students.
