Centre to Review Bangalore Metro Phase-2 and 3A Proposals Following State Submission
Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, Shri Manohar Lal, conducted a review of various urban missions in Bengaluru today, highlighting significant developments in the city’s infrastructure projects. The meeting included key figures from the Karnataka government, such as Ministers for Urban Development, Municipal Administration, Housing, and Energy. During the review, the Union Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing projects, particularly the Bangalore Metro, and emphasized the importance of addressing legacy waste and promoting sustainable water reuse in urban areas.
Review of Urban Missions
Shri Manohar Lal’s review meeting in Bengaluru brought together several prominent Karnataka officials, including Sh Byrathi Suresh, the Minister for Urban Development, and Sh Rahim Khan, the Minister for Municipal Administration. The discussions focused on the performance of various urban missions, with the Union Minister expressing his approval of the current progress. He noted that the revised cost estimate for the Bangalore Metro Phase-2 project would be submitted for Central Government approval once the proposal is officially approved by the Karnataka State Cabinet. This step is crucial for advancing the metro project, which aims to enhance public transportation in the city.
Expansion of the Bangalore Metro
The Bangalore Metro network is set for significant expansion, with approximately 75 kilometers currently operational and an additional 145 kilometers under construction. Recently, the Central Government sanctioned a 45-kilometer extension for the metro’s Phase-3 network, with an investment of Rs 15,600 crore. The Karnataka government has proposed an additional 37-kilometer Phase-3A project, estimated to cost around Rs 28,400 crore. This proposal is pending examination by an expert agency, and the Central Government will consider it for sanction once the state government provides the necessary feedback.
Focus on Sustainability and Urban Development
During the review, the Union Minister underscored the urgency of addressing legacy waste issues in urban areas. He advocated for the reuse of treated wastewater as a sustainable solution to the growing demand for fresh water resources. This approach is essential for enhancing sustainability in urban environments. Additionally, he recommended allowing higher Floor Area Ratios (FAR) along mass transit corridors, which could lead to better urban planning, reduced traffic congestion, and increased public transport usage.
Financial Support and Reforms
The discussion also touched on the financial needs of the state beyond the approved schemes from the Government of India. The Union Minister encouraged the Karnataka government to implement necessary reforms to qualify for a 50-year interest-free loan under the ‘Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SSASCI) 2025-26.’ This financial support could play a pivotal role in facilitating further urban development and infrastructure improvements in Bengaluru.
