Centre Considers Incentives for Electric Truck Companies

The Indian government is actively exploring a range of incentives to boost the adoption of electric trucks, particularly on key highway routes. Among the proposed measures are upfront subsidies, reduced interest rates, toll waivers, and lower registration fees. This initiative, part of the PM e-Drive program, aims to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) in the trucking sector, which has seen a surge in demand for electric two- and three-wheelers. The government is also focusing on enhancing the necessary infrastructure to support this shift.

Priority Routes for Electric Trucks

The government has identified several priority routes for electric trucks, including the Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Jaipur, Mumbai-Nashik, Mumbai-Pune, and Agra-Lucknow highways. These routes have been selected based on travel times, which typically range from five to six hours. The initiative is part of a broader strategy under the PM e-Drive program, which has already witnessed significant uptake in the electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler markets. As the allocated subsidies for these segments are expected to be depleted soon, the government is keen to extend similar benefits to the electric truck sector.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries is spearheading a โ‚น500 crore scheme aimed at promoting electric trucks. To ensure a comprehensive approach, the ministry has engaged in consultations with various stakeholders, including other government ministries and industries such as steel, cement, ports, and logistics. The feedback gathered will help shape the final plan, which will also consider successful models from Europe and China, where electric trucks are widely used.

Subsidies and Infrastructure Development

The proposed subsidies for electric trucks will vary based on the size of the vehicle, with an overall budgetary limit set for the initiative. The government recognizes that financial incentives are crucial for encouraging truck operators to transition to electric vehicles, mirroring the successful adoption seen in the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments. Additionally, the power ministry has raised concerns about the need to strengthen the power grid to accommodate the increased demand for electricity from electric trucks.

In parallel, Tata Motors and Force Motors have expressed interest in manufacturing electric ambulances, which will also be included in this initiative. The heavy industries ministry is also preparing to issue tenders for the supply of 10,000 to 11,000 electric buses, with a total subsidy of up to โ‚น35 lakh per bus. Cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad have already submitted proposals for a combined total of 15,400 buses, exceeding the funding available for 14,000 buses.

Charging Infrastructure and Future Plans

To support the growing electric vehicle market, the government is collaborating with various departments to establish the necessary charging infrastructure under the PM e-Drive scheme. Industry stakeholders have raised concerns about the high costs associated with this infrastructure, which could impact the overall success of the initiative. The heavy industries ministry is committed to addressing these challenges to ensure a smooth transition to electric vehicles.

As the government moves forward with its plans, it remains focused on creating a conducive environment for electric trucks and buses. The interest shown by major manufacturers and the proactive steps taken by the government signal a significant shift towards sustainable transportation solutions in India. With the right incentives and infrastructure in place, the future of electric trucking looks promising.
