Celebrating Resilience at IFFI 2024
The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has once again showcased the power of storytelling through cinema. This year, two remarkable films, “Ammaโs Pride” and “Onko Ki Kothin,” have captured the hearts of audiences across the nation. Both films address significant social issues while highlighting the resilience of their characters. The filmmakers and cast gathered for a press conference in Panaji, Goa, to discuss their works and the messages they hope to convey.
Ammaโs Pride: A Journey of Resilience and Pride
“Ammaโs Pride” stands out as the only LGBTQ+ film featured at this year’s IFFI. The film offers a raw and honest portrayal of a trans womanโs struggle for dignity and acceptance. Directed by Shiva Krish, the film follows Srija, a young trans woman from South India, as she navigates the complexities of her life and marriage. The film centers on her relationship with her mother, Valli, who supports her unconditionally.
Shiva Krish emphasized the importance of representing transgender individuals in a positive light. He noted that many films often depict trans people in negative stereotypes, which can be disheartening. “The backbone of the film is the mother, Valli, who enables her daughter to live life on her own terms,” he explained. This portrayal aims to challenge societal perceptions of transgender individuals and promote understanding.
The film has already received accolades at various film festivals, including the Sher Vancouver Award for Best LGBTQ+ Film at the International South Asian Film Festival in Canada. It has been screened at prestigious events like the 64th Krakow Film Festival and the Woodstock Film Festival. The director hopes to create a social impact through an upcoming campaign in India and the United States, aiming to foster a more positive representation of trans people in mainstream media.
Onko Ki Kothin: Dreams Amidst Adversity
The Bengali feature film “Onko Ki Kothin” made its world premiere at IFFI 2024. This poignant film tells the story of three underprivileged children who build a makeshift hospital while facing numerous challenges. Directed by Saurav Palodhi, the film highlights the resilience and determination of these young characters as they strive to achieve their dreams against all odds.
Palodhi shared that the inspiration for the film came during the COVID-19 pandemic when many government schools were shut down. “If the factories of dreams, i.e., schools, are shut down, where will children learn to dream?” he pondered. This core idea motivated him to create a narrative that reflects the struggles faced by underprivileged children in India.
Ushashi Chakraborty, an actress in the film, expressed her passion for the project. She noted the lack of representation for underprivileged children in Indian cinema and felt compelled to tell their story. “This story of three kids who never quit despite all the hurdles is an inspiring tale for future generations,” she stated.
The film aims to shed light on the harsh realities faced by children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Palodhi concluded by emphasizing the importance of education and the dreams of these children, which often get overshadowed by their circumstances.
Conclusion: A Celebration of Cinema and Social Change
The 55th International Film Festival of India has once again proven to be a platform for meaningful storytelling. Both “Ammaโs Pride” and “Onko Ki Kothin” highlight the resilience of their characters while addressing critical social issues. These films not only entertain but also educate and inspire audiences to reflect on the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
As filmmakers continue to push boundaries and challenge societal norms, the hope is that their stories will foster understanding and empathy. The IFFI serves as a reminder of the power of cinema to effect change and promote inclusivity in society.
