The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has announced the recipients of the esteemed National Panchayat Awards for the appraisal year 2022-2023. These awards highlight the outstanding contributions of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) across India. This year, 45 awardees have been selected from a diverse range of categories. These categories include the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar, Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar, and others. Each category focuses on specific areas of achievement, such as poverty reduction, health, child welfare, and climate sustainability. The awards aim to highlight the significant impact of PRIs in improving the quality of life in rural areas.
The selection process for these awards was rigorous. It involved a thorough appraisal of each Panchayat’s performance across various thematic areas. The evaluation aligned with the Localization of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs). Five committees conducted the assessment, starting from the block level and extending to the national level. Participation and Representation of Women
This year, a remarkable 1.94 lakh Gram Panchayats participated in the competition. Among the 42 awardee Panchayats, 42% are led by women. This statistic is significant as it reflects the increasing role of women in local governance. The recognition of women-led Panchayats is a step towards promoting gender equality in rural leadership.
The participation of such a large number of Gram Panchayats demonstrates the competitive spirit among these institutions.
