Celebrating Assam’s Culture: Jhumoir Binandini 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently attended the Jhumoir Binandini 2025, a grand cultural event held in Guwahati, Assam. This Mega Jhumoir program showcased the vibrant traditions of Assam, particularly the Jhumor dance, which is deeply rooted in the culture of the tea tribes and Adivasi communities. The event was filled with energy and enthusiasm, reflecting the rich heritage of Assam. Modi expressed his admiration for the artists and the impressive preparations that highlighted the beauty of Assam’s tea gardens. He noted that the large number of performers would set a new record, similar to the unforgettable Bihu Dance event he attended in 2023.

A Celebration of Assam’s Rich Heritage

The Jhumoir Binandini is not just a dance performance; it is a celebration of Assam’s cultural diversity. With 8,000 performers participating, the event symbolizes the unity and inclusivity of the Assamese people. Modi emphasized the importance of such grand events in showcasing India’s rich cultural tapestry. He recalled a time when Assam and the Northeast were often overlooked in terms of development and cultural recognition. Today, he proudly identifies as a brand ambassador for Northeastern culture. His efforts to promote Assam’s biodiversity, including his historic stay in Kaziranga, have brought global attention to the region.

The Prime Minister also highlighted significant achievements for Assam, such as the recognition of the Assamese language as a classical language and the inclusion of Charai Deu Moidam in the UNESCO World Heritage list. These milestones reflect the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural identity. Modi’s presence at the Jhumoir Binandini serves as a reminder of the importance of celebrating local traditions and fostering a sense of pride among the people.

Honoring Historical Figures and Tribal Heritage

During his address, Modi paid tribute to Lachit Borphukan, a legendary warrior who defended Assam’s culture against Mughal invasions. The Prime Minister noted the ongoing celebrations for Borphukan’s 400th birth anniversary, which included a tableau at the Republic Day parade. A 125-foot bronze statue of Borphukan has also been erected in Assam, symbolizing the state’s respect for its historical figures.

In addition to honoring historical figures, Modi announced initiatives to celebrate the heritage of tribal communities. The government has initiated Janjatiya Gaurav Divas to recognize the contributions of tribal societies. Furthermore, tribal museums are being established across the country to immortalize the sacrifices of tribal heroes. These efforts aim to instill a sense of pride in the younger generations and ensure that the rich history of Assam’s tribal communities is preserved.

Development Initiatives for Assam’s Tea Community

The Prime Minister’s address also focused on the development of Assam’s tea industry and the welfare of the tea community. He announced bonuses for Assam Tea Corporation workers to enhance their income. Additionally, the government is providing financial support to around 1.5 lakh women in tea gardens during pregnancy, easing their financial burdens.

Healthcare initiatives are also being prioritized, with plans to open over 350 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in tea gardens. These centers will provide essential health services to families in the tea community. Education is another focus area, with more than 100 model tea garden schools already established and plans for an additional 100 schools. The government is also offering a 3% reservation in the OBC quota for the youth of the Tea Tribe and providing โ‚น25,000 for self-employment initiatives. Modi expressed confidence that these development efforts will uplift the tea industry and contribute to the overall growth of Assam and the Northeast.

The Jhumoir Binandini 2025 was not just a cultural event; it was a celebration of Assam’s identity, history, and future. With the support of the government and the participation of the community, Assam is poised for a brighter tomorrow.
