Celebrating a Decade of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao
The Ministry of Women and Child Development in India is gearing up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme. This initiative has been pivotal in protecting, educating, and empowering the girl child across the nation. The anniversary celebrations will run from January 22 to March 8, 2025, culminating on International Womenโs Day. This milestone reflects India’s commitment to a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047 and aligns with the global shift towards Women-Led Development, a priority emphasized during India’s G20 Presidency.
Inaugural Event at Vigyan Bhawan
The inaugural event for the 10th anniversary will take place on January 22, 2025, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. This significant occasion will be attended by prominent figures, including Union Minister of Health and Family Affairs, Shri J. P. Nadda, and Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smt. Annpurna Devi. The event will also see participation from women officers in the armed forces, paramilitary forces, and Delhi police, along with senior women officials from various Central Ministries.
Additionally, girl students, Anganwadi supervisors, and representatives from state and district levels have been invited to join the celebration. The presence of international organizations such as UNICEF, UN Women, and the World Bank will further underscore the global importance of the BBBP initiative. The inaugural ceremony will feature an oath-taking segment and the launch of a compendium showcasing best practices. It will also introduce the Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti portals, aimed at further empowering women and children in India.
Nationwide Celebrations and Activities
The 10th-anniversary celebrations will not be limited to New Delhi. Similar events will be organized at state and district levels, with special programs scheduled for January 22, January 26, and March 8. These activities will include rallies, cultural events, and felicitation ceremonies. The initiative aims to engage various stakeholders, including schoolgirls, women achievers, and community groups, through campaigns under SANKALP: Hub for Empowerment of Women.
Throughout the celebration period, nationwide campaigns will utilize print, digital, and social media to amplify the message of the BBBP scheme. A plantation drive will also be conducted to promote sustainable practices. These activities are designed to foster a sense of community and encourage active participation in the movement for gender equality.
Achievements of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao
Since its launch on January 22, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BBBP scheme has transformed from a policy initiative into a national movement. It addresses critical issues such as gender imbalance and declining child sex ratios in India. The initiative has successfully mobilized government agencies, civil society, and the public to combat gender discrimination and promote the rights of the girl child.
Key achievements of the BBBP scheme include an improvement in the national Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) from 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24. The gross enrollment ratio of girls at the secondary level has also risen from 75.51% to 78% during the same period. Furthermore, institutional deliveries have increased significantly, from 61% to 97.3%, and first-trimester antenatal care registrations have improved from 61% to 80.5%.
The scheme has initiated impactful programs such as the Yashaswini Bike Expedition, which highlights women empowerment, and the Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav, which successfully re-enrolled over 100,000 out-of-school girls. These initiatives demonstrate the commitment to fostering a culture that values the girl child and ensures her rights and opportunities.
Commitment to Gender Equality
As the 10-year journey of the BBBP scheme unfolds, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, in collaboration with partner ministries, reaffirms its commitment to advancing gender equality. The initiative aims to ensure that women are not merely beneficiaries but active leaders of change. The upcoming celebrations will serve as a reminder of the progress made and the work that still lies ahead in creating a more inclusive future for all girls in India.
The BBBP scheme continues to inspire positive change across the nation, reinforcing the importance of empowering women and girls. As the celebrations commence, the focus will remain on building a Viksit Bharat, where every girl child has the opportunity to thrive and lead.
