Celebrating 49 Years of the Indian Coast Guard
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) marked its 49th Raising Day on February 1, 2025. This significant milestone highlights nearly five decades of dedicated service to the nation. On this occasion, the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Raksha Mantri extended their heartfelt congratulations to the ICG. They recognized the remarkable achievements of the Coast Guard and its vital role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests. To commemorate the day, ICG’s Director General, Paramesh Sivamani, laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. This act paid homage to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
A Journey from Humble Beginnings
The Indian Coast Guard began its journey in 1977 with just seven surface platforms. Over the years, it has transformed into a formidable maritime force. Today, the ICG boasts a fleet of 151 ships and 76 aircraft. This growth reflects the increasing importance of maritime security in India. By 2030, the ICG aims to reach a target of 200 surface platforms and 100 aircraft. This ambitious goal will solidify its position as one of the world’s premier Coast Guard services.
The ICG operates under the motto “Vayam Rakshamah,” which means “We Protect.” This motto embodies the organization’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of India’s vast maritime zones. Since its inception, the ICG has saved over 11,730 lives, including 169 in the past year alone. This unwavering dedication highlights the Coast Guard’s crucial role in protecting seafarers, fishermen, and vessels across India’s expansive 4.6 million square kilometers of Search and Rescue Region.
Vigilance and Operational Excellence
The ICG maintains round-the-clock vigilance over India’s maritime domain. Daily, it deploys 55 to 60 surface platforms and 10 to 12 aircraft to monitor and protect the seas. In addition to search and rescue operations, the ICG plays a vital role in preventing and combating illegal activities at sea. The organization has seized contraband worth an astonishing โน52,560.96 crore. Notably, it made a record seizure of 6,016 kilograms of narcotics in a single operation in the Andaman Sea.
The ICG’s disaster response capabilities further demonstrate its strength and resolve. The organization has conducted notable operations during natural disasters, such as rescuing individuals during Cyclone ASNA in Gujarat. It has also provided flood rescue and relief in Gujarat and Wayanad. The ICG coordinates complex night-time medical evacuation operations, showcasing its commitment to saving lives in critical situations.
Commitment to Modernization and Environmental Protection
The ICG’s commitment to self-reliance and modernization is evident in its embrace of indigenous capabilities. Under the Make-in-India initiative, the ICG has signed contracts for state-of-the-art air cushion vehicles, advanced communication systems, and new-generation patrol vessels and helicopters. Approvals have also been granted for the procurement of Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft, Dorniers, and additional helicopters. These advancements enhance the ICG’s ability to respond to emerging maritime threats effectively.
In addition to its operational capabilities, the ICG is dedicated to protecting the marine environment. As the designated authority for oil spill response in Indian waters, the ICG has led key national exercises, including the National Pollution Response Exercise. These initiatives enhance the organization’s preparedness for environmental emergencies. Furthermore, the ICG organized the International Coastal Clean-up Day on September 21, 2024, in line with the Government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This event mobilized efforts across coastal states and Union Territories to promote cleanliness and environmental stewardship.
