Call of Duty: WWII Removed from Xbox PC App

Activision has temporarily removed Call of Duty: WWII from the Xbox PC app due to serious security concerns raised by players. Reports indicate that a significant security exploit could allow hackers to gain control of players’ computers while they are gaming. Although Activision has not confirmed the specific vulnerability, the company is actively investigating the issue, which surfaced after the game was added to Xbox Game Pass in late June.

Security Concerns Prompt Action

The decision to take Call of Duty: WWII offline was announced via the official Call of Duty Updates channel on X. The post stated, โ€œCall of Duty: WWII on PC Microsoft Store was brought offline while we investigate reports of an issue.โ€ Players have reported alarming incidents of being hacked while playing the game on the Xbox app for PC. The vulnerability appears to be linked to Remote Code Execution (RCE), which allows malicious actors to remotely control a player’s computer. This could lead to the installation of malware or unauthorized access to sensitive data.

One player even shared gameplay footage that allegedly captured the hacking incident. In the video, viewers can see pop-ups from the command prompt and notepad, indicating that the player had been compromised. While Activision has taken the game’s servers offline, Call of Duty: WWII remains listed on the Xbox app for PC, and the publisher has not provided any further updates since acknowledging the issue.

Game Pass Availability and Impact

Call of Duty: WWII was added to Xbox Game Pass on June 30, making it accessible to subscribers across various tiers, including Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Standard. The game, originally released in 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, marks the fourth mainline title in the Call of Duty franchise to join the subscription service. Other titles available on Game Pass include Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 2 and 3. Notably, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was the first title in the series to launch on the service on its release day.

The addition of Call of Duty: WWII to Game Pass has attracted a significant player base, but the current security issues have raised concerns about the safety of gaming on the platform. As players await further information from Activision, the company is also preparing to unveil the next installment in the franchise.

Upcoming Releases and Future Plans

In addition to addressing the current security concerns, Activision is gearing up for the summer reveal of the next Call of Duty title. Black Ops 7 was confirmed during the Xbox Games Showcase last month and is scheduled for release later this year. The new game will be available across multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Like its predecessor, Black Ops 7 will also be accessible on Game Pass from day one.

As Activision navigates the challenges posed by the security exploit in Call of Duty: WWII, the company remains focused on its upcoming releases. The gaming community is eager for updates on both the resolution of the current issues and the future of the franchise.
