Cabinet Approves Development of 166.80 km Greenfield High-Speed Corridor

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for a significant infrastructure project: the development of a 166.80 km Greenfield Access Controlled National Highway No. 06. This ambitious project, which will connect Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam, is estimated to cost โ‚น22,864 crore. The new highway aims to enhance connectivity in the northeastern region, improving travel times and logistics efficiency while promoting economic growth.

Project Overview and Objectives

The proposed highway will stretch 166.80 kilometers, with 144.80 kilometers located in Meghalaya and 22 kilometers in Assam. This high-speed corridor is designed to facilitate smoother traffic flow between Guwahati and Silchar, significantly reducing both travel distance and time. By improving access to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region, the project aims to bolster logistics efficiency across the nation. The corridor is expected to enhance the service level for vehicles traveling through this vital route, ultimately benefiting both local and regional economies.

Economic and Social Impact

The new highway is set to improve connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya, fostering economic development in the region. It will pass through areas known for cement and coal production, potentially attracting new industries and investments. Additionally, the corridor will serve as a gateway for national and international tourists arriving via well-connected airports in Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar. By linking scenic tourist destinations in Northeast India, the project is poised to promote tourism and stimulate local economies.

Infrastructure and Connectivity Enhancements

This critical infrastructure initiative will enhance inter-city connectivity among major cities such as Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar. The highway will traverse several districts, including Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, and Cachar, alleviating congestion on the existing NH-06. The project aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which aims to develop transport infrastructure across the country. The new corridor will also integrate with major transport routes, including NH-27, NH-106, and NH-37, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the region.

Employment Generation and Future Prospects

Upon completion, the Shillong-Silchar Corridor is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, with an estimated 74 lakh man-days of direct employment and 93 lakh man-days of indirect employment. The project is projected to handle an annual average daily traffic of approximately 19,000 to 20,000 passenger car units by FY-25. This development not only aligns with the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat but also aims to foster socio-economic growth in Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, enhancing the overall quality of life in these regions.
