The fully restored, uncut version of the 1975 classic will premiere at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy, on Friday. This special screening will feature the film’s original ending and previously deleted scenes, showcasing a cinematic masterpiece that has captivated audiences for decades.

The world premiere of “Sholay” will take place at the renowned Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival, known for its dedication to classic films. The screening will occur on the festival’s iconic open-air screen in Piazza Maggiore, one of Europe’s largest outdoor venues. In 2022, Shehzad Sippy, the son of Ramesh Sippy, approached the Film Heritage Foundation in Mumbai with a proposal to restore the film. Remarkably, the original 35mm camera and sound negatives were discovered in unlabelled cans stored in a Mumbai warehouse. The restoration team collaborated with the British Film Institute to access additional archival materials, which were crucial for piecing the film back together. Despite the challenges, the restoration effort has resulted in the most faithful version of “Sholay,” complete with its original ending and never-before-seen scenes.

Enduring Legacy and Reception

Upon its initial release, “Sholay” faced a rocky start, with early reviews being critical and box office performance uncertain. However, as word of mouth spread, audiences began to embrace the film, leading to its eventual success. It ran for over five years at Mumbai’s Minerva theatre, becoming a staple of Indian cinema. The film’s characters, particularly Gabbar Singh, became iconic, and it was even dubbed India’s first “curry western” by foreign critics. Today, “Sholay” continues to resonate with audiences, embodying timeless themes of good versus evil and poetic justice.
