Bilateral Trade in Local Currencies

India and Mauritius are set to enhance their economic ties through a new initiative allowing trade in local currencies, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a bilateral meeting with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi. This significant development aims to simplify transactions for businesses and citizens of both nations, building on previous advancements such as the introduction of UPI and RuPay card services in Mauritius. Modi emphasized that this move will facilitate smoother trade flows between the two countries.

Special Economic Package Unveiled

During the meeting, PM Modi introduced a Special Economic Package, which he described as an investment in the future of both nations. This package will finance several key projects, including the construction of a 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, a Veterinary School and Animal Hospital, and an AYUSH Centre of Excellence. Modi highlighted that these initiatives are designed to bolster infrastructure, create new job opportunities, and enhance healthcare services in Mauritius. The package reflects India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius in its developmental goals and strengthening the bilateral relationship.

Infrastructure and Connectivity Initiatives

The leaders also discussed advancing various infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity in Mauritius. Key initiatives include the development of the Chagos Marine Protected Area, the construction of an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower at SSR International Airport, and the expansion of highways and ring roads across the island. These projects are expected to enhance transportation efficiency and promote economic growth, further solidifying the partnership between India and Mauritius.

Commitment to Renewable Energy

Energy security was a focal point of the discussions, with India pledging to provide 100 electric buses to Mauritius, ten of which have already arrived on the island. PM Modi confirmed India’s support in establishing a 17.5 MW floating solar power plant at Tamarind Falls, underscoring India’s dedication to assisting Mauritius in its transition to renewable energy sources. This collaboration aims to enhance energy sustainability and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Focus on Education and Skill Development

PM Modi also emphasized India’s role in human resource development, noting that over 5,000 Mauritians have received training in India. Currently, 500 civil servants are participating in courses in Mussoorie. To further bolster educational ties, a new Directorate of Science and Technology will be established in Mauritius. Additionally, IIT Madras and the Indian Institute of Plantation Management have signed agreements with the University of Mauritius to enhance research and innovation. Modi’s visit to Mauritius in March, during the National Day celebrations, marked a significant elevation of ties to an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership,” reinforcing India’s support for Mauritius’ sovereignty following its success in the Chagos Agreement.
