Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (5 May 1930 – 6 December 1998), was an Indian military officer and a recipient of India’s highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra.
Life and Career
Hoshiar Singh Dahiya was born on 5 May 1937 in Sisana village, Sonipat district, Punjab. He completed his schooling at Jat Heroes Memorial High School, Rohtak, and later attended Jat College, Rohtak, and the Army Cadet College at the Indian Military Academy. After completing his matriculation and first year of graduation, he joined the Army as a Jawan. He was later selected for the Officer’s course and joined the Army Cadet College at IMA.
On 30 June 1963, he was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army. During his service, he held various ranks including Second Lieutenant (30 June 1963), Lieutenant (30 June 1965), Captain (30 June 1969), Substantive Major (30 June 1976), Lieutenant Colonel (8 April 1983), and Colonel (at the time of retirement).
During the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, he participated in the Battle of Basantar. He was ordered to capture an enemy locality, which was held in strength by them. During the operation, he indulged in a hand-to-hand fight with the enemy, and under his leadership, the unit repulsed all attacks inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. For his gallantry during this battle, he was awarded the prestigious Param Vir Chakra.
He retired from the army in May 19882. After his retirement, he lived in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
He passed away on 6 December 1998 due to a cardiac arrest.
