Bangladesh Delegation Visits China Amid Rising Tensions
Bangladesh is witnessing a significant diplomatic shift as a 22-member delegation embarks on a 10-day visit to China. This group comprises political leaders, civil society activists, academics, and journalists. Their primary objective is to engage in discussions with Chinese government officials and senior members of the ruling Communist Party. This visit comes at a time when diplomatic tensions between Bangladesh and India are escalating, particularly concerning the political fate of ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, who currently resides in India.
Goodwill Visit to Strengthen Ties
The delegation, led by Abdul Moyeen Khan from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), aims to foster goodwill between Bangladesh and China. Khan emphasized that this visit is unique, as it represents a diverse array of groups from Bangladesh, rather than a single political faction. Many members of the delegation are affiliated with the BNP and its allies, which have been vocal critics of the previous Awami League government led by Hasina.
The BNP, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, is one of the two major political parties in Bangladesh. The delegation also includes representatives from the student movement that played a crucial role in the mass uprising that led to Hasina’s ousting in August of last year. Currently, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is in power, and it has been actively seeking the extradition of Hasina from India to face various charges, including crimes against humanity and money laundering.
China’s Growing Influence in Bangladesh
China’s engagement with Bangladesh has intensified following the political upheaval that saw Hasina’s government fall. Analysts suggest that Beijing is keen to increase its influence in Bangladesh, especially in light of the diplomatic rift between Dhaka and Delhi. The visit by the Bangladeshi delegation follows a meeting earlier this year between the interim government’s foreign policy advisor, Touhid Hossain, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
This marks the second visit by BNP officials to China in recent months, indicating a warming relationship between the two nations. China has become Bangladesh’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $24 billion. A significant portion of this trade consists of Chinese exports to Bangladesh. Moreover, the Bangladeshi military relies heavily on Chinese military equipment, with over 70% of its supplies sourced from China.
Tensions with India and Regional Dynamics
The relationship between Bangladesh and India has become increasingly strained since Hasina’s ousting. During her 15-year tenure, Hasina was perceived as pro-India, balancing her ties with New Delhi while also engaging with Beijing. However, the current interim government has expressed frustration over India’s refusal to extradite Hasina, who denies all allegations against her.
In recent months, the BNP has accused India of interfering in Bangladesh’s internal affairs by providing refuge to Hasina. This has led to protests and criticism from various Bangladeshi officials, further straining relations. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar recently remarked that it is up to Bangladesh to determine its relationship with India, dismissing the criticisms as “absolutely ridiculous.”
As tensions rise, some analysts warn that this rhetoric could push Bangladesh closer to China. The situation mirrors the dynamics in other South Asian countries, such as Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Nepal, where both India and China are vying for influence. Chinese analyst Zhou Bo cautioned that India should not assume the entire subcontinent is under its sphere of influence, as such an attitude could lead to significant diplomatic repercussions.
