Ayush Mission Boosts Traditional Healthcare Across India
The Ministry of Ayush has announced significant advancements under the National Ayush Mission (NAM), revealing a financial assistance of over ₹276.5 crores to various states and Union Territories over the past five years. This funding aims to enhance the infrastructure and accessibility of traditional healthcare systems, including the establishment of Integrated Ayush Hospitals (IAHs) and the promotion of the Ayush Gram concept, which encourages holistic health practices in rural communities.
Financial Support for Ayush Initiatives
The Ministry of Ayush has actively implemented the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the National Ayush Mission (NAM) through state and Union Territory governments. Over the last five years, a total of ₹276,529.87 lakhs has been allocated to support various activities aimed at promoting Ayush systems. This funding is based on proposals submitted by states and Union Territories through their State Annual Action Plans (SAAPs). The financial assistance is designed to bolster the overall infrastructure and outreach of traditional healthcare practices across the nation. In addition to financial support, the Ministry has approved the establishment of 145 Integrated Ayush Hospitals (IAHs) as part of its commitment to enhancing healthcare services. These hospitals are strategically located to ensure that traditional healthcare is accessible to a larger population. The detailed status of these approved hospitals is documented in the Ministry’s reports, which provide insights into the distribution and operational capacity of these facilities.
Establishment of Integrated Ayush Hospitals
The establishment of Integrated Ayush Hospitals is a key component of the NAM initiative. These hospitals are designed to integrate various traditional healthcare systems, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, under one roof. This approach not only promotes the use of traditional medicine but also ensures that patients have access to a comprehensive range of healthcare services. The Ministry has reported that the approved IAHs are spread across various states and districts, with a focus on enhancing healthcare delivery in underserved areas. The initiative aims to create a robust healthcare framework that combines modern medical practices with traditional healing methods, thereby improving health outcomes for communities.
Promoting the Ayush Gram Concept
Another significant initiative under the NAM is the Ayush Gram concept, which focuses on promoting traditional health practices in rural areas. The program aims to adopt the principles of Ayush living in selected villages, providing financial assistance of ₹3.0 lakhs per unit to support health interventions for populations ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 in 2-3 villages within a block. Over the past five years, 699 Ayush Gram units have been established across the country, reflecting the government’s commitment to integrating traditional health practices into everyday life. While the Ministry has not maintained district-wise data for these units, the overall impact of the Ayush Gram initiative is expected to enhance community health and well-being significantly.

The recent announcements by the Ministry of Ayush underscore the government’s commitment to revitalizing traditional healthcare systems in India. Union Minister of State (I/C) for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted these developments in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the importance of integrating Ayush practices into the broader healthcare framework.
