Ayush Mhatre Shines as IND U19 Faces ENG U19 After ODI Struggles

India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre has made a remarkable comeback after a challenging start in the ongoing England tour. Following a series of disappointing performances in the Youth ODI series, where he only crossed double digits once, Mhatre found his rhythm again with impressive back-to-back centuries in the Youth Test matches. He scored 102 and 32 in the first Test at Beckenham, then followed up with a standout 80 and a blistering 126 off just 80 balls in the second Test at Chelmsford. This turnaround comes after a promising IPL debut where he scored 206 runs in six matches for the Chennai Super Kings.
Struggles in the Youth ODI Series
Mhatre faced significant challenges leading up to the Youth Tests. In the five-match Youth ODI series, he managed to score only 21, 0, 5, and 1 in his first four outings, which was a stark contrast to his IPL form. He missed the final match of the series due to fever, further complicating his situation. The transition from the flat pitches of the IPL to the seaming English conditions proved to be difficult for the 18-year-old. Despite his struggles, his performance in the IPL had set high expectations, and adapting to the challenging conditions in England was crucial for his development as a player.
A Turning Point with Back-to-Back Centuries
Mhatre’s fortunes changed dramatically in the Youth Tests. He scored an impressive 102 in the first Test at Beckenham, followed by two more valuable innings with scores of 80 and 126 in the second Test at Chelmsford. His ability to adapt quickly to different formats and conditions showcased his potential as a key player for the U-19 squad. Mhatre’s success came after receiving valuable guidance from his childhood coach, Prashant Shetty. His coach encouraged him to reflect on his past successes, helping him regain confidence and focus.
Support from Coaches and Teammates
The support from his coach and teammates has been instrumental in Mhatre’s resurgence. Shetty emphasized the importance of separating captaincy from batting, which allowed Mhatre to focus on his individual performance. He also noted that Mhatre needed to remember his past success and not carry the weight of his IPL form into the current series. Mhatre’s opening partner, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, also shone brightly, scoring 86 and 143 in the ODIs, demonstrating the young talent available in the squad. Mhatre’s leadership skills were recognized by the Mumbai head coach, Omkar Salvi, who expressed confidence in his abilities.
Looking Ahead: Duleep Trophy and Future Challenges
Following his successful stint in England, Mhatre’s next challenge will be the Duleep Trophy, set to begin in September as part of the 2025-26 domestic season. This tournament will be played on a zonal basis, providing Mhatre with another platform to showcase his skills. With newfound confidence from his recent performances, he aims to continue his development and contribute significantly to his team. As a young leader, Mhatre is expected to take on more responsibilities in the future, and his recent achievements will serve as a solid foundation for his career ahead.
