Awareness Programmes on Bleeding Disorders Organized Nationwide

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment marked World Haemophilia Day on April 17 with a series of awareness programs across the nation. This annual observance aims to raise awareness about bleeding disorders, particularly haemophilia, and promote better treatment and care for affected individuals. The theme for 2025, “Access for All: Women and Girls Bleed Too,” emphasizes the need for improved diagnosis and treatment for women and girls suffering from these conditions.

Awareness Initiatives Nationwide

On April 17, 2025, various National Institutes and Composite Regional Centres (CRCs) organized events to educate healthcare professionals, students, and the public about haemophilia. The Swami Vivekananda National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTAR) in Cuttack held a special program where experts discussed critical information regarding the prevention and diagnosis of haemophilia. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to engage local policymakers and enhance the overall understanding of bleeding disorders.

In Kolkata, the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD) hosted a webinar and health talk focusing on the symptoms and prevention of haemophilia. Approximately 130 patients and caregivers participated, highlighting the importance of community involvement in raising awareness about this health issue. Such programs are crucial for fostering a supportive environment for those affected by bleeding disorders.

Educational and Community Events

The National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (NIMHR) in Madhya Pradesh celebrated World Haemophilia Day with a variety of educational and cultural events. These activities aimed to increase community awareness about haemophilia and its implications. The CRC in Nellore also contributed by conducting awareness sessions for nursing students and organizing a blood donation camp in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society, attracting around 150 participants.

In Tripura, CRC officials shared vital information about haemophilia during an awareness program. Meanwhile, CRC Rajnandgaon organized a blood donation camp, and the regional center of NIEPID in Navi Mumbai hosted a webinar titled “Haemophilia: Care and Rehabilitation.” These events collectively underscore the importance of community engagement in addressing health challenges related to bleeding disorders.

Collaborative Efforts Across Regions

Multiple CRCs and National Institutes under the DEPwD participated in awareness programs to commemorate World Haemophilia Day. CRC Davangere and CRC Jaipur, among others, conducted various initiatives aimed at educating the public about haemophilia. These programs not only raise awareness but also foster collaboration among healthcare professionals, patients, and their families.

The collective efforts of these institutions reflect a commitment to improving the lives of individuals affected by bleeding disorders. By promoting education and awareness, these organizations aim to ensure that all individuals, regardless of gender, have access to the necessary care and treatment.

Looking Ahead

As World Haemophilia Day continues to gain recognition, the focus remains on enhancing awareness and improving access to treatment for all affected individuals. The DEPwD’s initiatives serve as a vital platform for fostering understanding and collaboration among various stakeholders. With ongoing efforts, there is hope for better diagnosis, treatment, and overall care for those living with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
