Aroma Mission: Transforming Northeast India

The Aroma Mission, a significant initiative by the Indian government, is gaining momentum in the Northeast region and Jammu & Kashmir. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the importance of this mission during the inauguration of the Incubation & Innovation Complex (IICON) at CSIR-NEIST. He highlighted how the mission aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision for inclusive development. The Aroma Mission aims to harness the untapped natural resources of these regions, contributing to India’s economic growth while empowering local communities.

The Aroma Mission: A Government Priority

Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that both the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir have been prioritized by the Modi government. The Aroma Mission, which started in Jammu & Kashmir, is now expanding into the Northeast. This initiative focuses on the cultivation of aromatic plants, which have the potential to significantly boost the local economy. The minister pointed out that these regions are rich in biodiversity and natural resources that have remained largely unexplored. By tapping into these resources, the Aroma Mission aims to create new economic opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs.

The mission is not just about agriculture; it is a comprehensive approach that integrates various government schemes. It aligns with initiatives like StartUp India and MSME support, ensuring that the benefits reach a wider audience. Dr. Singh described the Aroma Mission as a model of the “whole-of-government” approach, which aims to empower local communities through collaboration and innovation. This initiative represents a significant step towards realizing the potential of the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir, transforming them into hubs of economic activity.

Empowering Local Communities Through Innovation

During the North East Aroma Conclave 2025, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the transformative potential of the Aroma Mission. He noted that the initiative is designed to foster startups, self-help groups, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). By providing support and resources, the mission aims to enhance farmers’ income and create employment opportunities. The event also marked the distribution of agreements to 25 startups and NGOs, empowering them to utilize the advanced facilities at IICON.

The IICON serves as a “one-stop solution” for entrepreneurs, farmers, and artisans. It offers 27 advanced technologies to support innovation and skill development. Selected entrepreneurs will have access to incubation facilities for up to two years, allowing them to refine their production and marketing strategies. This support is crucial for reducing business risks and ensuring the success of new ventures.

The Aroma Mission has already shown promising results. Over 27 facilities established at CSIR-NEIST are being utilized by various stakeholders. The initiative is creating new opportunities in sectors like essential oils and medicinal plants. With the Northeast poised to replicate the success of lavender cultivation in Jammu & Kashmir, the potential for economic growth is significant.

A Vision for Sustainable Development

Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that the Aroma Mission aligns with broader national priorities, such as doubling farmers’ income and promoting women’s empowerment. He praised the Rural Women Technology Park developed under the mission, calling it a model for replication across the country. The mission aims to address the untapped potential of the Northeast, enabling it to contribute significantly to India’s economy.

The minister also discussed the broader vision of transforming the Northeast into a hub of connectivity, innovation, and collaboration. He noted that the region has seen improvements in rail, air, and water networks, which open avenues for industrial partnerships and exports. This enhanced connectivity is vital for fostering economic growth and attracting investment.

As the Aroma Mission progresses, it is expected to bolster India’s bio-economy and biotechnology sectors. With the recently launched Bio-E3 policy and new collaborations, the Northeast is set to emerge as a key contributor to India’s growth story. The North East Aroma Conclave 2025 stands as a testament to how integrated government initiatives can drive regional progress and national aspirations.
