Arc Secures $160M Major Order for Electric Tugboats

If you’ve heard of Arc Boats, the innovative Los Angeles startup founded in 2021 by former SpaceX employees, it’s likely due to their striking sport boats. However, the company is now making waves in the tugboat sector, securing a significant $160 million contract with Curtin Maritime. This deal marks a pivotal step for Arc as it ventures into hybrid-electric tugboats, with plans to launch eight vessels by 2027, aimed at reducing emissions in the bustling Los Angeles port.
Major Contract with Curtin Maritime
Arc Boats announced on Wednesday that it has signed a substantial contract with Curtin Maritime, a prominent tug and barge operator. This agreement involves the construction of eight hybrid-electric tugboats, each valued at approximately $20 million. The new vessels are set to operate in the waters around the Los Angeles port, with delivery expected in 2027. The construction will take place in collaboration with Snow & Co. shipyard. These tugboats are classified as ship-assist vessels, designed to maneuver large cargo ships in and out of major ports, including Los Angeles.
Mitch Lee, CEO and co-founder of Arc, emphasized the environmental impact of traditional tugboats, which are typically powered by large diesel engines that emit harmful pollutants. He noted that these vessels are among the worst offenders in terms of air pollution, contributing to significant environmental damage and health risks for crew members. By transitioning to a hybrid-electric system, Arc aims to drastically reduce emissions, helping tugboat operators meet stringent environmental regulations and improve air quality in the region.
Innovative Hybrid-Electric Technology
Arc’s new tugboats will primarily operate on electric propulsion, utilizing powerful motors that generate over 4,000 horsepower from a substantial 6MWh battery. While a smaller diesel generator will be included, it is designed to serve as a backup for charging the battery during longer trips or in areas lacking marine charging infrastructure. Lee explained that this hybrid system allows for greater flexibility, ensuring operators are not left stranded due to insufficient battery power.
The shift from diesel to electric not only addresses pollution concerns but also optimizes space on the tugboats. Lee pointed out that the absence of large exhaust stacks typically found on traditional tugs can lead to more room for crew quarters and improved visibility from the control tower, or “wheelhouse.” This design innovation is particularly beneficial for crew members who often spend extended periods on board, sometimes up to two weeks at a time.
Impact on the Tugboat Industry
The deal with Curtin Maritime is significant, considering there are only about 20 ship-assist tugboats currently operating at the Los Angeles port. Lee believes that the introduction of these eight hybrid-electric tugs could substantially reduce overall emissions in the area. He expressed confidence that this contract represents a meaningful step toward modernizing the tugboat industry, which plays a crucial role in the economy by facilitating commercial maritime activities.
Lee’s enthusiasm for the project is palpable, as he sees a growing interest in shipbuilding and maritime innovation. He noted that while much of the current focus is on defense-related maritime activities, the commercial sector is equally vital. The modernization of tugboats, which are essential for maneuvering vessels in busy ports, presents a unique opportunity for Arc to lead the charge in environmentally friendly maritime solutions.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite the promising outlook, Lee faces challenges in testing the new tugboats. Unlike the company’s sport boats, which he has personally tested, the larger tugboats require specialized licenses for operation. While he has experience with smaller models, the regulations surrounding larger vessels limit his hands-on involvement. Nevertheless, Lee remains optimistic about the future of Arc Boats and the potential impact of their hybrid-electric tugboats on the maritime industry.
As the company continues to innovate and expand its offerings, it aims to play a pivotal role in transforming the tugboat sector. With a commitment to sustainability and efficiency, Arc Boats is poised to make significant strides in reducing emissions and enhancing the operational capabilities of tugboats in major ports.
