Apple’s Health App to Feature AI Doctor

Apple is set to transform its Health app by introducing an artificial intelligence (AI) doctor, aiming to provide users with a personalized health experience. The revamped app will integrate data tracking across various devices and offer tailored health recommendations. This initiative, internally dubbed Project Mulberry, is expected to launch alongside the upcoming iOS 19.4 update.

Revamping the Health App: Project Mulberry

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is prioritizing the overhaul of its Health app, which will include new AI-driven features. The project is reportedly being led by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Sumbul Desai, head of the health teams. Their focus is on ensuring a smooth rollout, learning from past setbacks the company has faced in health app development.

Previously, Apple struggled to create a health app that effectively connected users with doctors for general medical inquiries. In addition to the Health app, Apple is also working on a non-invasive blood sugar monitoring sensor for the Apple Watch, although a release date for this feature remains uncertain.

The new Health app will collect data from devices such as the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, as well as compatible third-party devices. This data will be analyzed by an AI system that generates personalized health recommendations for users, enhancing their overall wellness experience.

AI Doctor and Expert Collaboration

The AI doctor within the app will be trained using insights from Apple’s in-house physicians. Furthermore, Apple plans to collaborate with external medical professionals specializing in various fields, including sleep, nutrition, physical therapy, mental health, and cardiology. These experts will create video content addressing common health issues and lifestyle improvement tips. If the AI doctor detects concerning health metrics, it will recommend these videos to users as part of its guidance.

Additionally, the revamped app will introduce food tracking capabilities, allowing users to log their meals. The app will automatically calculate calories and macronutrients, while the AI coach will provide nutritional advice based on users’ dietary habits.

Innovative Features and Future Developments

Apple is also exploring the integration of camera access within the Health app. This feature would enable the AI doctor to monitor users’ workout routines and offer suggestions for improving their exercise techniques. These enhancements are expected to be linked to Apple’s Fitness+ platform, which may require a subscription for full access. To facilitate the creation of video content for the app, Apple is reportedly establishing a new facility near Oakland, California. The company is also on the lookout for a “doctor personality” to enhance the chatbot’s interaction with users, ensuring a more engaging and informative experience.
